Satellite images published by the New York Times cast light on the extent of Israeli ground operations in Gaza so far into the conflict.

The images reveal limited advances in open areas stretching no more than a few kilometres in the north of Gaza.

Israel's military has thus far undertaken a limited and seemingly cautious approach into the besieged territory with Hamas  and other Palestinian fighters believed to be well dug in and embedded in the area's tunnel infrastructure.

Since 7 October, Israel's strategy has been heavy air bombardment of the territory, which has resulted in thousands of deaths among Gaza's civilian population.

According to military strategists, the tactic has tactical disadvantages in addition to ethical concerns.

The destruction of urban infrastructure is believed to be advantageous to a defending force, as it provides such fighters with more places to hide and launch ambushes.

In an event organised by International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) about the war on Gaza, Professor Avi Shlaim a British historian of Iraqi-jew descent explains the difference between anti-zionism and anti-semitism.

Shlaim talked about how Israel and its allies often conflate the two terms to rebuke any criticism of their policies and actions.

He was speaking at an ICJP event, which also included Daniel Levy, a former Israeli negotiator atthe Oslo Accords, Wadah Khanfar, the head of the Al-Sharq Forum and former director-general of Al Jazeera, and Yasmine Ahmed, director of Human Rights Watch.

The event was moderated by Middle East Eye's Mohamed Hassan.

The head of Yad Vashem, Israel's official Holocaust memorial body, has condemned the wearing of a yellow star by Israel's diplomatic mission to the UN on Monday.

Israel's representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, and his team wore the badge in order to condemn the world's "silence" over the killing of Jews in Israel during the attack by Hamas-led Palestinian fighters on 7 October.

Yad Vashem chairman Dani Dayan said: "The yellow patch symbolises the helplessness of the Jewish people and being at the mercy of others. Today we have an independent country and a strong army."

His organisation is aimed at preserving the memory of the six million Jews killed by Germany's Nazi regime during the Second World War.

The Nazis made those determined to be of Jewish descent wear yellow stars in order that they be identified as such in public.

Yemen's Houthi rebels have confirmed that they launched drones towards Israel on Tuesday in retaliation for the ongoing bombardment of Gaza.

The AFP news agency said a senior official from the group had told its journalist about Houthi involvement in the conflict.

"These drones belong to the state of Yemen," said Abdelaziz bin Habtour, the prime minister of the Sanaa based government in Yemen dominated by the group.

Israeli officials had earlier confirmed that a drone had been detected in the Red Sea and local media outlets said it had been brought down by the Israeli military.

Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has said his country will not allow anything to be "imposed" on the Sinai region during a visit to the area bordering Israel and besieged Gaza.

Madbouly's comments during a visit to a military base are seemingly a reference to proposals within Israel to resettle Gaza's Palestinian population in the Sinai.

"We are ready to spend millions of lives on every grain of sand here," Madbouly said, adding: "Egypt will never allow anything to be imposed on it."

According to Israel's Ynetnews, citing Egyptian officials, Israel has put forward a number of initiatives to entice Egypt into accepting Palestinian refugees.

One of the proposals includes wiping out a substantial chunk of Egypt's debts through the World Bank, a report by the outlet states.

It's not clear what influence Israel has at the World Bank to be able to have part of Egypt's international debts written off.

A number of recent reports state that Israel wants Egypt to host Gaza's refugee population.

On Monday, Haaretz reported the existence of an Israeli intelligence ministry document that said Israel wants the permanent resettlement of Gaza's Palestinians in tent cities in Sinai.

Israeli forces fatally shot an elderly man in Tubas city on Tuesday, the second Palestinian to be killed in the occupied West Bank in less than an hour.

The Palestinian health ministry said Rouhi Rasheed Sawafata, 70, was shot in the face and killed.

Israeli forces raided Tubas, located in northeastern West Bank, and opened fire at Palestinians who clashed with the troops to push back against the raid.

At least nine Palestinians were wounded, medics said.

Israeli forces have killed at least 124 Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 25 days since 7 October.

In a press conference in Tel Aviv on Tuesday, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari of the Israeli navy said that the families of 240 hostages held by Palestinian groups in Gaza have been informed of their capture.

That number might still be higher as the Israeli army continues to investigate the events of 7 October, when Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel.

Hagari also said that the current death toll among the Israeli army since the beginning of hostilities was 315.

That number excludes dozens of police officers, who were also killed.

Hamas has released four hostages and the Israeli army claims to have rescued another during an operation on Monday night.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lobbied EU leaders to use their influence with Egypt to accept Palestinian refugees from Gaza, according to a Financial Times report on Monday.

The British paper said EU members including the Czech Republic and Austria had floated the idea at a meeting of member states last month.

Represenatives from countries including France and Germany believe that the idea is a non-starter as Egypt categorically refuses to accept Palestinian refugees.

An unnamed diplomat from an unnamed country, however, told the Financial Times that the pressure of Israel's continued assault on Gaza could shift Cairo's stance.

"Now the time is to put increased pressure on the Egyptians to agree," the official said.

Egypt does not want a Palestinian influx within its borders as it recalls memories of the Nakba in 1948, in which Zionist militias forcibly expelled more than 700,000 Palestinians from historic Palestine and prohibited them and their descendants from ever returning.

The fear among Arab states and the Palestinians themselves is that any expulsion of people from Gaza would be permanent.

Cairo has vociferously rejected any new forced expulsion of Palestinians but Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is also a close Western ally.

Israeli media is reporting the possible shooting down of a drone approaching Israel from the Red Sea on Tuesday morning.

The Times of Israel reported that the Israeli military had identified an “aerial target” but did not confirm whether it had been shot down.

On Friday, explosions believed to be caused by armed drones injured six people in the Egyptian resort of Taba, close to the Israeli border.

Houthi fighters in Yemen are known to have a sophisticated drone arsenal and have previously threatened Israel over its bombardment of Gaza.

Both Israeli and Palestinian media outlets reported heavy fighting between Palestinian fighters and the Israeli army in Gaza overnight on Monday.

According to the outlet Yedioth, the Israeli army does not comment on its ongoing engagements with Palestinian fighters on the ground and instead imposes a media blackout.

Palestinian sources said there was fighting in the northern area of Gaza, as well as areas east of Gaza City and Khan Younis.

Israel has made several large incursions into Gaza over the past few days but has not made any statement on the casualties it has suffered, if any.

Hamas has repeatedly claimed to have targeted Israeli soldiers with anti-tank weapons.

The Israeli military says it "attacked 300 targets" in Gaza over the last 24 hours, as its ground offensive picks up and its troops move towards Gaza City.

Military Spokesman Daniel Hagari said Israel had attacked the shafts of anti-tank and rocket launching positions, tunnel shafts and military compounds of Hamas.

Israel invaded the Gaza Strip in smaller numbers than some analysts had anticipated. Its forces are now moving from the North and South towards Gaza City, in an apparent attempt to surround it.

Hamas fighters have also engaged Israel.

In a statement on Telegram, the Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s armed wing, said it had engaged in small arms fire and targeted four Israeli vehicles with anti-tank shells and explosive devices.

So far, however, the fighting remains outside Gaza City's sprawling urban landscape, where experts say it is likely to become even more bloody.

The Israeli military has destroyed a home in the occupied West Bank owned by senior Hamas official Saleh al-Arouri, in the town of Aroura, northwest of Ramallah.

A video of the bomb blast posted on social media, shows the large stone building in a mountainous village brought down by an explosion.

Arouri is deputy chairman of Hamas’ Politburo and the group’s leader in the occupied West Bank.

While he has expanded Hamas' footprint in the region, he is currently based in Lebanon.

Saudi Arabia’s Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman called for an immediate ceasefire to the war during a meeting with White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

A White House readout of the meeting said the two discussed the war, but didn’t mention talk of a ceasefire. The US said last week it is opposed to a ceasefire, but supports a humanitarian pause to the fighting.

The White House statement said Sullivan confirmed the US’s commitment to support the defence of its partners against threats from state and non-state actors, including those backed by Iran. It also said the two discussed humanitarian aid for Gaza.
