A coalition of Muslim-American groups angry at US support for Israel's devastating war on Gaza is asking Muslim voters to shun Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris in November's presidential race and back either Jill Stein, Cornel West or other pro-Palestine candidates.

"After extensive consultation, discussion, and deliberation, the American Muslim 2024 Election Task Force has decided to encourage American Muslims to vote for any presidential candidate of their choosing who supports a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and a US arms embargo on the Israeli government, such as candidates Dr Jill Stein, Dr Cornel West or Chase Oliver," read the statement, obtained by Middle East Eye.

The statement was written by the American Muslim 2024 Election Task Force, an umbrella group formed this year that consists of a number of prominent Muslim organisations including the political arms of Americans for Justice in Palestine (AJP), Cair, and the US Council of Muslim Organizations.

In addition to calling on Muslim Americans to vote for a pro-Palestine candidate at the presidential level, the task force's statement emphasises the need to vote for down-ballot candidates who are also advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza and arms embargo on Israel.

Hamas condemned an Israeli air strike on a school in Gaza City, which was sheltering displaced civilians and killed 22 people, including 13 children. The attack also left 30 people wounded in the Zeitoun neighbourhood.

Hamas, in a statement, called these acts “unprecedented crimes in modern history” and labelled them as a blatant violation of human values and international law.

The group further accused the US of providing military and political cover, allowing the continued "brutal genocide in Gaza."

The statement emphasised that the international community now faces a moral, humanitarian, and legal test to stop the Israeli occupation’s aggression, hold its leaders accountable, and address its crimes.

The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has renewed its advisory, urging citizens to avoid travelling to Lebanon due to ongoing Israeli attacks.

Jordanians currently in Lebanon are being asked to leave the country immediately.

This comes as Israel launched a significant wave of airstrikes on southern Lebanon, with heavy rocket fire from Lebanese forces in response, marking some of the most intense fighting since the war on Gaza began last October.

Al Jazeera has obtained images from an Israeli drone shot down in the Gaza Strip, revealing human rights violations by Israeli soldiers against Palestinian civilians in Khan Yunis.

The footage shows Israeli soldiers forcing an unarmed Palestinian to strip on a street in the area.

Additionally, drone imagery captures widespread destruction, with Palestinian homes being blown up and a bomb being dropped directly from another drone onto an unarmed, wounded Palestinian.

Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital issued a statement outlining critical conditions, warning that the facility could cease operations in "less than 10 days" due to shortages of oil and generator parts.

The hospital, which serves over one million residents in central Gaza, has been relying on generators continuously for a year during the ongoing conflict.

The hospital described the situation as posing the risk of "a real humanitarian disaster" and called on the World Health Organisation, Red Cross, and other international bodies to "immediately and urgently" intervene.

Israeli forces killed at least 16 Palestinian orphans and widows after bombing a school sheltering displaced families in Gaza City on Saturday, according to local officials.

The children and women killed in the attack had lost their primary caregiver in earlier Israeli attacks amid the relentless bombing campaign ongoing for nearly a year, the Gaza-based government media office said.

The orphans and widows had arrived at the Zeitoun C school in southern Gaza City to receive cash assistance as part of a charity orphan sponsorship programme.

The media office said the “horrific massacre” was the latest episode of Israel’s genocidal war against Gaza’s civilians.

At least 181 schools-turned-shelters have been bombed by the Israeli air force since the war on Gaza began nearly a year ago, it added.

Jewish-American businessman Steven Eisman, a hedge fund manager known for betting on the collapse of the US housing market, faced backlash after writing on social media that he was “celebrating” the destruction of Gaza.

His comments, which he later retracted, were made in response to a graphic video showing burning buildings and people suffering from an Israeli attack.

The original post highlighted the lack of international concern. “The world is silent.” Eisman replied on Thursday, saying, “We are not silent. We are celebrating.”

Eisman's firm, Neuberger Berman, said he did not speak on its behalf and called his actions "objectionable."

More than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel in its almost one year war on the people of Gaza. Eisman was put on leave by his firm on Friday.

In two legal briefs filed on Friday, Israel says it is challenging both the legality of the International Criminal Court’s request for arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as the court's jurisdiction.

In May, the court’s prosecutor, Karim Khan, announced he is seeking arrest warrants for the two Israeli officials as well as three members of Hamas leadership: Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif, and Ismail Haniyeh.

Haniyeh has since been assassinated in Iran in an operation that Israel has not confirmed or denied, and the ICC has ended its court proceedings against him. And while Israel says it has killed Deif, Hamas has yet to confirm his demise. The ICC is seeking confirmation on the death to end their court proceedings.

Khan’s request for the warrants is based on what he believes are war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated from 7 Oct 2023 onwards, after the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel and the subsequent war on Gaza.
