Biden 'outraged' over Israel's killing of US activist

US President Joe Biden says he is "outraged and deeply saddened" by the killing of US-Turkish activist Aysenur Eygi, calling it "totally unacceptable".

"There must be full accountability," Biden said in a statement. "And Israel must do more to ensure that incidents like this never happen again."

The president added that his government received full access to Israel's preliminary investigation, which he says indicates the killing was "the result of a tragic error resulting from an unnecessary escalation".

Eygi was peacefully protesting the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

"The violence in the West Bank has been going on for too long," Biden adds. "Violent extremist Israeli settlers are uprooting Palestinians from their homes. Palestinian terrorists are sending car bombs to kill civilians. I will continue to support policies that hold all extremists – Israelis and Palestinians alike – accountable for stoking violence and serving as obstacles to peace."

Eygi's family have called for an independent investigation into her killing, calling an Israeli investigation "not adequate".
