EU expresses concern over Israeli military action in West Bank

The European Union has expressed "grave concern" over Israeli military action in the occupied West Bank, which has destroyed "vital civilian infrastructure".

The 40-day offensive has largely targeted refugee neighbourhoods and seen the displacement of around 40,000 Palestinians.

The EU urged Israel to comply with international law by protecting civilians and facilitating the return of displaced people.

It also called on Israel to take action against violence by Israeli settlers across the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

"As we enter the holy month of Ramadan, we call on all parties to exercise restraint to allow for peaceful celebrations," the EU's diplomatic service said.
