Israeli police restrict press coverage of celebrations for former Palestinian prisoners

In an attempt to suppress coverage of Palestinian celebrations surrounding the release of prisoners under Israel's deal with Hamas, Israeli police in Jerusalem are clamping down on press freedom, the Israeli paper Haaretz reported.

Four female Palestinian journalists from East Jerusalem were held by Israeli police for trying to report on the return of Palestinian prisoners to their homes.

Journalists also said they faced threats and violent treatment while covering the events.

The families of released prisoners were also warned by authorities not to organise marches or share their experiences on social media.
