Israeli electricity cut to impact desalination plant
9 March 2025 17:24 GMT
We reported earlier that Israel's Energy Minister has announced he has issued orders to sever electricity supplies to Gaza, amid Israel's ongoing aid blockade on the territory.
According to the UN, Gaza has long faced a “chronic electricity deficit”, impacting essential services, particularly the territory's water supply.
The only power line into Gaza supplies the territory's main desalination plant, which serves over 600,000 people. Palestinians in the territory have relied on solar panels and fuel generators for their electricity.
The power line was severed after 7 October 2023, and reconnected in July 2024- however, the plant could not function fully until December that year as it had been so badly damaged by Israeli attacks.
