US envoy says Hamas' ceasefire proposal a 'non-starter'

US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff has called Hamas' demands regarding the Gaza ceasefire "an unacceptable response", saying the group's proposal was a "non-starter".

In an interview with CNN, he described the recent Arab summit in Cairo as "game-changing, but for Hamas' response".

Hamas reportedly said negotiations for a ceasefire must begin on the same day as the next release of Palestinian detainees and Israeli captives, further demanding an end to Israel's blockade of Gaza.

"There's an opportunity for [Hamas], but the opportunity is closing fast," Witkoff said.

This comes as Israeli and Hamas delegations negotiate in Doha.
