Rashida Tlaib attacked for statement grieving Israeli and Palestinian lives lost

Democratic Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib was slammed by some on the far-right and in Israel for saying she grieved the loss of Palestinian and Israeli lives amid fighting in the region.

Tlaib, the only Palestinian-American member of Congress said,  “I grieve the Palestinian and Israeli lives lost yesterday, today and every day” after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel following months of escalating violence against the Palestinians.

Tlaib added that Israel was carrying out an apartheid system, echoing judgements made by the UN's special rapporteurs and several human rights organisations, such as Amnesty International, which have also concluded that Israel practises apartheid.

To address the escalating violence, Tlaib called for “lifting the blockade, ending the occupation, and dismantling the apartheid system that creates the suffocating dehumanising conditions that can lead to resistance.”

One user of X, formerly known as Twitter, said Tlaib was the “most disgusting member of Congress.”

Michael Herzog, the Israeli ambassador to the US, also criticised Tlaib on X.
