Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said in response to the mass anti-government protests on Saturday that the "vast majority" of Israelis "do not fall into Hamas' trap".

"They know that we are fully committed to achieving the goals of the war, to eliminating Hamas, to bringing back all our hostages, to ensuring that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel,” he said at the start of a cabinet meeting earlier today.

An estimated 750,000 Israelis joined mass protests on Saturday against Netanyahu and his government, in one of Israel's biggest-ever demonstrations.

The three fatalities resulting from the shooting at the Allenby Crossing were security guards, the Israeli army has confirmed.

The military said in a statement that the alleged assailant arrived from Jordan in a truck and opened fire at security forces before being shot dead.

It added that three Israeli civilians were pronounced dead as a result of the attack, later clarifying to the AFP news agency that they were “working as security guards” and not in the army or police.

Israeli forces have detained at least 35 Palestinians from across the West Bank over the last two days, prisoner advocacy groups are reporting.

The Palestinian Prisoner's Society (PPS) and the Palestinian Authority's Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees said in a joint statement that the arrestees included former prisoners, adding that at least one woman was summoned for questioning.

The groups said the raids were conducted across most West Bank governorates, and that these arrest campaigns had become a central policy of the Israeli forces, accelerating since Israel's war on Gaza began in October.

The UN-led polio vaccination drive in Gaza has been extended by a day in order to allow more people to access vaccination centres amid Israeli attacks, the Palestinian Health Ministry said today.

The campaign, which aims to vaccinate a total of 640,000 children across the enclave, was launched to combat the spread of the virus due to the destruction of hygiene and sanitation facilities by Israeli attacks.

Last month, Gaza reported its first polio case in 25 years.

A gunman killed three Israelis in an attack near the Allenby Bridge border crossing between the occupied West Bank and Jordan before security forces shot him dead on Sunday, Israeli authorities have said.

The Israeli military said the gunman "approached the area in a truck from Jordan, exited the truck, and opened fire at the Israeli security forces operating at the bridge".

Three Israeli civilians were pronounced dead at the scene after a military medical team had performed resuscitation efforts.

"The terrorist was eliminated by the security forces. Three Israeli civilians were pronounced dead as a result of the attack," it said.

The shooting took place in an Israel-controlled commercial cargo area, where Jordanian trucks offload cargo entering the West Bank from the kingdom.

For better or worse, the 1942 quasi-propaganda film Casablanca, with its stellar cast headed by Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, was a staple of my generation’s access to movie theatres showing classic, independent and foreign films in the US in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Called on to shut down a gambling operation run by American Rick Blaine (played by Bogart), French police captain Louis Renault (played by Claude Rains) speaks a line that has become a slogan of the times to refer to blatant hypocrisy and corruption.

While his heart is with the resistance, Renault works for Vichy - and while he has to shut down the club, he also wants to cash in. As he loudly blows his whistle to call for reinforcements, Renault shouts at Blaine: “I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here” - and Ugarte, the character played by Peter Lorre, quickly hands the captain his winnings.

I can’t begin to count the number of times this scene and those words have crossed my mind as I have watched responses to Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza

Palestinian photographer Mahmud Hams has earned the prestigious Visa d’Or News award for his coverage of Israel's brutal war on Gaza.

Hams, 44, has been with AFP in the Gaza Strip since 2003. He spoke out against the targeting of journalists during the conflict.

“I grew up in Gaza and, in 23 years of photojournalism, I’ve seen every war and conflict here. But this war is different,” Hams said in a statement.

“Many journalists have been killed or wounded. I’ve also lost friends and loved ones. We fought to keep our families safe. I hope our photos show the world that this war, and the suffering, must stop,” he added.

Eric Baradat, AFP's deputy news director, commended Hams' work, highlighting the challenging conditions faced by Hams and his colleagues.

"Their efforts are extraordinary and often unimaginable. Their work will be remembered in history," Baradat said

Last week's arrest by Turkish security forces of a Kosovo citizen for allegedly collaborating with Israeli intelligence has highlighted Israel's close ties with the Balkan country and its suspected espionage activities there.

Turkish security sources believe that Mossad, Israel's foreign intelligence agency, has been using Eastern European countries, particularly Kosovo, to finance its informants and operatives on the ground in Turkey.

The arrest of Liridon Rexhepi on 30 August was the result of months of work by Turkish intelligence, who had been monitoring Rexhepi's transactions, including payments to local informants spying on Palestinian politicians and recording them via drones.

The informants were said to also be gathering information on the situation in Syria.

Turkish intelligence monitored Rexhepi after he entered Turkey on 25 August, and tracked his money transfers to field personnel via Western Union, according to sources.
