Far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said the US needs to “respect Israeli democracy” when it comes to matters of Israel’s security.

Smotrich's comments were in response to White House national security spokesperson John Kirby, who said the US would not allow “extremists” to push Gaza ceasefire negotiations off course.

“I respect the US’ position and thank it for its support for Israel in the face of regional threats, but I expect it to respect Israeli democracy and the position of Israel’s citizens and elected officials in relation to decisions that will affect the country’s security,” Smotrich said.

“The [Yahya] Sinwar surrender agreement, which leaves most of the abductees to die, which frees many murderers, returns the terrorists to the north of the Gaza Strip, abandons the border and allows Hamas to smuggle weapons and restore its strength to return and attack Israel as an arm of Iran, is bad for Israel,” the far-right minister said. Smotrich did not provide evidence for these claims.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a phone call to finalise a ceasefire agreement and secure the release of Israeli captives, a German government spokesperson said on Sunday.

Scholz told Netanyahu that while many of Israel's military objectives in its fight against Hamas had been achieved, the civilian casualties and human suffering in Gaza have been immense.

"An end to the war in Gaza would be a decisive step towards a regional de-escalation," the government spokesperson said.

Scores of Israeli settlers, under the protection of Israeli police, raided Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem on Sunday morning.

The settlers entered the compound in groups and performed Talmudic rituals in its courtyards, according to Palestinian media.

Al-Aqsa Mosque is an Islamic site where, under decades-old international agreements, unsolicited visits, prayers, and rituals by non-Muslims are prohibited.

Israeli groups, with the backing of authorities, have repeatedly violated these agreements by facilitating raids and performing religious rituals at the site.

Israel's far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, posted a message on X, calling for Israel to occupy the Gaza Strip permanently.

Ben Gvir voiced his opposition to US-backed ceasefire efforts, saying that Hamas must be “crushed” until it “completely surrenders”.

He proposed halting all humanitarian aid and fuel shipments into Gaza until all Israeli captives held by Hamas were released.

Ben Gvir also urged Israeli authorities to “encourage emigration” and advocated for permanent Israeli control over the Gaza Strip.

"Encourage emigration and occupy the territories of the Gaza Strip in order to keep them in our hands permanently. It's in our hands," he wrote.

Israeli forces have expanded their forcible evacuation orders to additional areas of Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

According to the Wafa news agency, the Israeli military on Sunday instructed displaced families in parts of northern and central Khan Younis to leave immediately. This marks the third evacuation order in the city within a week, as Israel ramps up its military offensive in the southern part of the enclave.

At the same time as the evacuation order, Israeli air strikes reportedly targeted Khan Younis and its surrounding areas.

Israel's war on Gaza has killed at least 39,790 Palestinians in the besieged enclave since 7 October.
