According to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society, over 9,600 Palestinians from the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem are presently imprisoned in Israeli jails.

Many of these individuals are detained under administrative detention, a practice widely condemned for holding Palestinians without charge or trial, renewable in six-month periods.

Israeli forces have escalated their raids on Palestinian towns and villages almost daily, intensifying arrests in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and among Palestinian citizens of Israel.

The prisoners’ group also noted that many detainees face abuse and severe beatings during their confinement.

Congress is questioning the US's military cooperation with Qatar, calling for a review of a key US air base in the region, citing Doha’s “relationship” with Hamas.

The Senate’s draft fiscal 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) includes an amendment backed by Republican Senator Rick Scott that calls for the Pentagon to issue a report on the “operational value” of the al-Udeid military base.

“The effect on United States Air Force operations in the Middle East if the United States were to redeploy members of the United States Air Force from Al-Udeid Air Base….and the resources that would be required [to relocate troops]”.

Al-Udeid is the largest US air base in the region and the forward operating headquarters of all US forces in the Middle East, also known as Centcom. Roughly 10,000 US troops are based in Qatar.

The US is now considering temporarily dismantling and relocating its pier off the coast of Gaza for the second time over fears of poor conditions.

After it was previously damaged and repaired two times in the past month, the US-built pier meant to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians now also faces the question of whether the United Nations will even continue using it to distribute aid.

The mounting obstacles set out in front of the pier in its short lifespan are demonstrative of what former US officials, aid agencies and government watchdogs say is a US public relations stunt that serves to divert attention away from Israel's ongoing destruction of Gaza, as well as Israel's restriction of aid to the strip.

"This pier has been an immense and costly distraction from the work that we need to do and the problems we need to solve," Scott Paul, who leads humanitarian policy at Oxfam, told Middle East Eye.

US ambassador to Israel Jack Lew has strongly suggested that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should alter his approach to conflicts with Washington.

"My view is you try to keep the daylight to a minimum, not look for things that exaggerate how much space there is," Lew stated, without directly naming Netanyahu.

Lew remarked that Israel "has some work to do" to regain bipartisan support in the US.

Law was speaking at Reichman University’s Aaron Institute for Economic Policy’s annual conference. Lew mentioned that US-Israel relations are "not in a bad place substantively, but the image that has been created is not a great one".

He argued that Israel needs to better communicate its perspective on the war in Gaza to the US and the global community.

"The images in America are brutal. There are enemies of Israel that are actively telling the story in a very negative way," he said.

Lew attributed Israel’s moderate performance in public diplomacy to domestic political factors: "Part of the reason the world hasn’t seen everything Israel has done is because it was done in an environment where it would be great for the story to be told outside of the country, but not so much interest in advertising it inside the country."

He emphasised the Biden administration’s efforts to present Israel’s side of the story: "We’ve been telling the story very clearly that Israel had a right and responsibility to defend itself. We work day and night to make sure things like humanitarian assistance are provided. And Israel needs to tell the story that it is making sure that people are getting what they need for there not to be a famine."

Lew also clarified that there is no famine in Gaza: "It’s a really hard situation, but there is not a famine."

French President Emmanuel Macron lambasted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over election interference in the country during a phone call last week, reported Israeli journalist Barak Ravid, citing two sources familiar with the conversation's details.

In the weeks leading to the EU parliament elections and the French parliamentary elections, Israel’s Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli from Netanyahu’s Likud Party openly came out in support of Marine Le Pen's far-right party.

Chikli, who is also responsible for combating antisemitism, has been developing ties with far-right parties in Europe, many of which, like Le Pen's party, have an antisemitic past or present.

Macron told Netanyahu in the phone call that the interference by Israeli government officials in the French parliamentary elections was "unacceptable".

Israel has lashed out at a UN report that accused Israel of carrying out a “targeted starvation campaign” which has resulted in the deaths of children in Gaza.

The report by a group of independent experts, including UN special rapporteur on the right to food Michael Fakhri, insisted there was no denying famine was underway in Gaza due to the campaign.

The report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) published in June found that over 20 percent of Gaza's 2.2 million population households go entire days and nights without eating, amid the eight-month Israeli war and siege on Gaza.

“Mr Fakhri and many so-called experts who joined [him] are as much accustomed to spreading misinformation as they are to supporting Hamas propaganda and shielding the terrorist organisation from scrutiny,” Israel’s mission to the UN in Geneva said.

At least 33 children have died of malnutrition since the war began, mostly in northern Gaza, according to the Palestinian health ministry. The group of 11 rights experts cited the deaths of three children aged 13, nine and six months, from malnutrition in Khan Younis and Deir al-Balah since the end of May.

The al-Qassam Brigades have said they have killed Israeli soldiers in Gaza City.

According to Hamas’s armed wing, their fighters attacked Israeli troops in the Shujaiya neighbourhood, resulting in fatalities.

The statement, posted on Telegram, detailed that the soldiers were first attacked with a thermobaric rocket and then Hamas fighters used machine guns. As the soldiers attempted to withdraw, they were targeted again with an anti-personnel explosive device. The exact number of soldiers killed or wounded has not been specified.

There has been no comment from the Israeli army.

Indian universities have deepened research ties with Israeli colleges and weapons companies since the start of the war on Gaza, despite several institutions in the US and UK being forced to rethink exchanges as the death toll spirals, Middle East Eye can reveal.

In recent months, Indian universities have increased partnerships in the fields of defence, robotics and artificial intelligence (AI), with Israeli universities alleged to be complicit in the months-long conflict. Several are now either directly working with Israeli weapons companies or with Indian companies reported to have sent weaponry to Israel.

The partnerships, some publicly announced, have fuelled speculation that Israel is engineering closer ties with Indian universities - especially in the sciences - to build not only new hubs of defence and technology research for its armed forces but also as a means of exerting influence on Indian academia.
