Israel's latest offensive on Gaza City was likened to “the day of judgement” by eyewitnesses and survivors, who said the intensity was reminiscent of the initial invasion of Gaza in November.
Heavy air strikes started around midnight and lasted into the early hours of Monday, rocking the war-ravaged area and sending people into a panic.
Most of those who fled overnight were exhausted, confused and out of options, witnesses told Middle East Eye.
“The scene is really, really sad,” said Enas Rami, a central Gaza City resident.

The Guardian reports that the new Labour government is expected to drop a challenge recently submitted to the International Criminal Court questioning the court's request for an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The previous Conservative government had claimed that the ICC had no jurisdiction over Israeli nationals.
The Guardians says it now "appears highly unlikely that the new government will go ahead" with its claim.
The Israeli army said it has launched a new operation in Gaza City's Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood, claiming to have knowledge of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad infrastructure and operatives in the area.
The military also said it was operating at Unrwa's headquarters in the area, claiming it has been used by Hamas.
Palestinians said this was one the heaviest attacks since the start of the war on 7 October.
Gaza's Civil Emergency Service said they believed dozens of people have been killed in eastern Gaza, but their teams have been unable to reach them due to the ongoing offensive in the Tal al-Hawa, Sabra, Daraj, Rimal, and Tuffah neighbourhoods.
A six-year-old has died due to starvation, dehydration and lack of medical supplies in central Gaza's Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, the Wafa news agency reports.
The total reported number of children who have died of malnutrition has now risen to 41.
Israeli forces heavily bombed several areas of Gaza City’s eastern neighbourhoods and northern Gaza overnight, killing several Palestinians and injuring many more.
While the number of casualties is not clear yet, Palestine’s Wafa news agency says that “tens” of people were killed and injured in the latest attacks on the Daraj, Tuffah and Old City neighbourhoods.
Two missiles also hit the Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City overnight, with the Israeli military ordering a full evacuation of the hospital.
