Live: Israel kills at least 58 Palestinians in 24 hours

The United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees warned about "appalling and apocalyptic" conditions in Gaza on Thursday.

The UN has repeatedly warned about the acute humanitarian crisis in the besieged Gaza Strip, exacerbated by the war that has persisted for more than 14 months.

"Conditions for people across the Gaza Strip are appalling and apocalyptic," UNRWA spokeswoman Louise Wateridge said during a visit to Nuseirat in central Gaza.

She added that life-saving aid to "besieged areas in north Gaza governorate has been largely blocked" since the Israeli military launched a sweeping assault there in early October. 

The death toll from an Israeli attack on Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip on Thursday has risen to 33, according to Palestinian officials.  

The Gaza government media office called the attack “barbaric and [a] heinous massacre".

Most of the dead are women and children, Palestinian news agency Wafa reported earlier. 

A Palestinian family has been evicted from their home in the village of Jalbun, east of Jenin, by Israeli soldiers on Thursday, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa. 

The family of Ahmad Omar Abu al-Rob was evicted from the third floor of their house by Israeli soldiers who turned the apartment into a military post.

Israel has escalated its attacks on the occupied West Bank amid fighting in Gaza and Syria. 

At least 21 Palestinians were killed and dozens more injured on Thursday by Israeli strikes on the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian news agency Wafa. 

Israeli warplanes launched multiple air strikes on homes in the camp. The majority of those killed are women and children, according to the report. 

Thursday has been a bloody day in Gaza, with medical workers telling Wafa that at least 70 people have been killed by Israeli strikes, with the majority in the central and southern parts of the besieged enclave. 

Lebanon said an Israeli strike on the border town of Khiam killed one person on Thursday, hours after Washington announced Israel had withdrawn from the area as Lebanon's army deployed under a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah.

"The Israeli enemy strike on the town of Khiam killed one person and injured another," the health ministry said in a statement.

The South American nation of Paraguay formally opened its new Jerusalem embassy in Israel on Thursday, as Israel faces isolation on the world stage over its war on Gaza and Lebanon. 

The move is a victory for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who attended the ceremony with Paraguay's President Santiago Pena. 

Paraguay's former President Horacio Cartes ordered the move to Jerusalem in 2018 but later changed back to Tel Aviv after Cartes' successor, Mario Abdo, changed the policy. 

Pena is a conservative leader close to Netanyahu. 

US national security advisor Jake Sullivan on Thursday said that a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release may be close, adding that "we see movement from Hamas".

Speaking after a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel on Thursday, he said: "It might not happen, but I believe it can happen with political will on both sides."

Israeli air strikes targeting a house in northern Gaza's Jabalia al-Nazla killed two Palestinians, and injured several others, Wafa news agency is reporting.

In a separate attack, Israeli fighter jets targeted residential homes in the Sabra neighbourhood in southern Gaza City.

An Israeli drone strike on a residential apartment in the Sheikh Radwan area of Gaza City injured several more people.

An Israeli air strike on southern Lebanon's Khiyam has killed two people and injured another, Wafa news agency is reporting citing local sources.

Lebanon's Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned the atack as a "blatant act of betrayal," and called on the US and France, who brokered the ceasefire agreement, to curb Israeli aggression.

Mikati added that Israel's ceasefire violations should be addressed by the Monitoring Commttee responsible for the implementation of the ceasefire, and demanded immediate action to prevent further escalation.

 36 people have been killed in Israeli strikes across Gaza on Thursday, Reuters is reporting , citing medical sources.

Wafa news agency reported earlier that 35 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes across the enclave, including 13 people who were killed while attempting to secure aid trucks in Rafah.

A Palestinian doctor was shot and killed by Israeli forces while travelling between Kamal Adwan and al-Awda hospitals in northern Gaza, Wafa news agency is reporting citing local sources.

Dr Saeed Joda, the only orthopaedic specialist in northern Gaza, was shot in the head by an Israeli drone. According to the sources, Joda habitually travelled between the two hospitals due to staff shortages.

According to Wafa, Joda's 24-year-old son, Majd was killed a week ago while trying to rescue his cousins from under the rubble of a house targeted by an Israeli strike in Jabalia refugee camp.

More than 44,835 Palestinians have been killed and 106,356 wounded in Israel's war on Gaza since 7 October 2023, the Gaza health ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

Israeli forces completed their first withdrawal from a town in southern Lebanon, handing control to the Lebanese military under a ceasefire agreement, the US Central Command (Centcom) said on Wednesday.

"This is an important first step in the implementation of a lasting cessation of hostilities and lays the foundation for continued progress," Centcom’s leader General Erik Kurillathe said in a statement.

The ceasefire, which began on 27 November, is generally holding, but both sides have accused each other of violations. 

At least 35 Palestinians were killed early on Thursday in Israeli bombings of various areas in the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian news agency Wafa reported.

Children and women were among seven killed when a residential building in Gaza City's al-Jalaa Street was bombed, Wafa said.

Another 15 were killed in the bombing of a house where displaced people were taking shelter, west of Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, the agency added.

In the western area of Rafah city in southern Gaza, 13 Palestinians were killed and others were injured, according to Wafa, in a strike that hit people providing aid.

A suspected Palestinian shooting attack on an Israeli bus in the occupied West Bank killed a 10-year-old boy named Yehoshua Aharon Tuvia Simha, and injured four others overnight between Wednesday and Thursday, Israeli emergency services said.

The Israeli military said its forces were in pursuit of the gunman and had set up roadblocks and encircled an area near the Palestinian city of Bethlehem.
