Israel's war on Gaza has led to a health disaster, particularly in the overcrowded southern areas of Mawasi, Rafah and Khan Younis, reported the Palestinian news agency Wafa. The situation is dire for the displaced population, with conditions posing a significant threat to their lives.
The destruction of waste management infrastructure has resulted in the accumulation of rubbish, creating hazardous conditions for the affected residents.
The number of displaced people in the south has surged to about 1.5 million, worsening the already catastrophic circumstances. The mix of sewage and drinking water compounds the danger.
Streets are now lined with piles of waste, and many homes and buildings are in ruins.
In Khan Younis, particularly near Al-Aqsa University, thousands of tons of rubbish has accumulated, and floodwaters from sewage have inundated the area. The spread of insects and rodents further heightens the risk of disease, especially respiratory illnesses, which pose a severe danger to vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly.
The Government Media Office in Gaza has reported that 25 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli air strike targeting a residential building in Beit Hanoun.
Dozens more were injured or remain unaccounted for following the attack, which devastated the area and left residents searching for survivors amidst the rubble.
A Palestinian fisherman was killed by Israeli gunfire west of the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza, Al Jazeera reported.
In a separate incident, two individuals were killed in an Israeli air strike on al-Zahour neighbourhood, located north of Rafah city.
Al Jazeera Arabic reported that at least 20 Palestinians were killed, with many others wounded, during an Israeli raid on Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip.
At least 13 Palestinians were killed in Israeli shelling of the central Gaza Strip since the early hours of the day, medical sources reported to Al Jazeera Arabic.
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) released a report on Tuesday calling 2024 a "particularly bloody year" with 104 journalists killed worldwide, more than half of them in the Gaza Strip.
The federation had previously reported 129 journalists were killed in 2023.
IFJ secretary-general Anthony Bellanger described 2024 as "one of the worst years" for media professionals. He condemned the "massacre taking place in Palestine before the eyes of the entire world".
A medical source told Al Jazeera Arabic that at least seven Palestinians were killed, and others were wounded, in an Israeli air strike targeting a residential apartment in the Nuseirat camp, located in the central Gaza Strip.
