Speaking from Tel Aviv, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "reaffirmed his commitment" to a Gaza ceasefire deal during their meeting in Jerusalem.

Blinken also said he believes there is a "strong consensus" amongst Israeli leaders to move forward with the plan.

"This proposal and moving forward on it is the first step," he told reporters. "We want to see it come to fruition."

Blinken added that Hamas's welcoming of Monday's UN Security Council resolution was a "hopeful sign" and that while the US remains committed to the Palestinian group's defeat, military means are not sufficient.

"There has to be a clear political plan, a clear humanitarian plan, in order to ensure Hamas does not in any shape or form resume control of Gaza."

Hamas has accepted the latest UN Security Council ceasefire resolution and is ready to negotiate over the details, senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters.

The group accepts the resolution in regard to the ceasefire, withdrawal of Israeli troops and swap of hostages for detainees held by Israel, he said.

Abu Zuhri added that it was up to the US to make sure Israel abides by it.

"The US administration is facing a real test to carry out its commitments in compelling the occupation to immediately end the war in an implementation of the UN Security Council resolution," he added.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met separately with Israeli opposition figures Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid in Tel Aviv.

A statement from Gantz's office said the former war cabinet minister urged Blinken to apply "maximum pressure" on negotiators to reach a hostage release deal, saying he will "support any responsible arrangement on the matter from outside the government".

Gantz also told Blinken that "Israel will not hesitate to act forcefully" against Hezbollah in Lebanon if the threat the group poses cannot be removed.

Hamas says one of its commanders in the occupied West Bank, Mohammed Jaber Abdo, was amongst the four Palestinian fighters killed near the city of Ramallah by Israeli forces on Monday.

Israeli soldiers had raided the village of Kafr Nima in a search for a man they accused of carrying out an arson attack on an illegal West Bank settlement.

The troops fired on the vehicle the four men were in, killing all of them and injuring eight others in the raid.

An Israeli air strike hit a convoy of trucks in Lebanon’s Hermel region near the border with Syria, killing several people.

This marks the northernmost strike on Lebanon since clashes erupted between Israel and Hezbollah on 8 October, a day after the beginning of the war in Gaza.

Additionally, the Israeli army announced the death of four soldiers who were killed in a booby-trapped building in Rafah, southern Gaza on Monday.

Chipmaker Intel Corp is also set to halt plans for a $25bn factory in Israel, according to Israeli financial news website Calcalist.

The head of human rights group Amnesty International, Agnes Callamard, urged all parties to the conflict to implement Tuesday's UN Security Council’s Gaza ceasefire resolution.

In a statement on X she said: "The UN Security Council has adopted a long overdue US resolution to protect civilians, release civilian hostages and demand an end to eight months of bloodshed, unlawful attacks and mass humanitarian suffering in Gaza.

“The US had previously blocked multiple ceasefire resolutions, including by using its veto three times. Its shift is long overdue. With more than 37,000 Palestinians dead, amid a risk of genocide and an engineered famine, its stalling has come at an extremely heavy price,” Callamard said.

“The US must now use its influence to ensure this ceasefire becomes a reality. It must halt arms transfers to Israel and ensure that Israeli authorities allow unfettered humanitarian aid access throughout Gaza."

United States officials are weighing whether to strike a unilateral deal with Hamas to free five American hostages in Gaza if a ceasefire deal is not reached, according to a report by NBC news.

The report, citing two current and two former US officials, said the administration is considering using Qatar to negotiate with Hamas in talks that would not include Israel.

The deliberations come more than one week after US President Joe Biden announced a three-phase ceasefire proposal that he said would end the war on Gaza and lead to a hostage exchange.

But the deal has stalled with Hamas saying the agreement as laid out by Biden doesn't guarantee the war on Gaza will end. For its part, Israel said it will continue to wage war on Gaza until it destroys Hamas's governing and military capabilities in the besieged enclave.
