The Trump administration has withdrawn the nomination of Adam Boehler to serve as special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, according to the White House.

Boehler, who has been working to secure the release of captives held by Hamas in Gaza, will continue captive-related work as a “special government employee”, a position that would not need Senate confirmation.

“Adam Boehler will continue to serve President Trump as a special government employee focused on hostage negotiations,” White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.

A White House official who spoke on condition of anonymity told the Reuters news agency that Boehler withdrew his nomination to avoid divesting from his investment company, adding that the move was unrelated to the controversy sparked by his discussions with Hamas.

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (Unrwa) says it has recently established 130 temporary learning centers in Gaza to accommodate around 47,000 children throughout the Strip.

“Education for children restores some hope. It helps them heal [and] slowly re-connect with their childhood,” Unrwa Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini said in a post on X.

“It’s critical for overcoming the unspeakable traumas they are enduring.”

Lazzarini added that the students are receiving basic learning in Arabic, English, mathematics and science.

An unfolding US military campaign of strikes against Houthis in Yemen could last days and maybe weeks, a US official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

President Donald Trump announced the start of the operation earlier on Saturday, warning the Houthi attacks against Red Sea shipping needed to stop or "hell will rain down upon you."

US President Donald Trump threatened Iran over its support for Yemen’s Houthi rebels, warning of consequences if Tehran continued aiding the group.

Trump said: “To Iran: Support for the Houthi terrorists must end IMMEDIATELY! Do NOT threaten the American People, their President, who has received one of the largest mandates in Presidential History, or Worldwide shipping lanes.”

“If you do, BEWARE, because America will hold you fully accountable and, we won’t be nice about it!” he added.

The statement came after Trump announced an attack on Yemen that killed at least nine people on Saturday.

The Houthi rebels have been targeting ships in the Red Sea as acts of resistance to support Palestinians in Gaza under Israeli bombardment.

At least nine people were killed in strikes on Yemen's capital on Saturday, Houthi rebels said after US President Donald Trump announced an attack on the group.

Another nine people were wounded in the first US strikes on the Houthis, who have attacked Israel and Red Sea shipping throughout the Gaza war, since Trump took office in January.

The rebels' Al-Masirah TV station said an "American-British aggression raided a residential neighbourhood in the Shuub district" in Sanaa.

In a post on social media, Trump vowed to "use overwhelming lethal force until we have achieved our objective", citing the Houthis' threats against Red Sea shipping.

A team of charity workers has been killed in Israeli strikes in northern Gaza, the UK-registered Al Khair Foundation has told the BBC.

The charity reported that eight people, including its volunteers and independent journalists documenting their activities, were killed when Israel targeted their vehicles on Saturday.

Qasim Rashid Ahmad, founder and chairman of the charity, said that the team was setting up tents and capturing the process to help promote the charity when the Israeli strikes hit the area.

The UK’s Royal Television Society (RTS) has reinstated its award recognising the work of journalists in Gaza, reversing its earlier decision to cancel it last week.

“Following the decision to pause the presentation of the award, the RTS met this week as part of the Society’s previously announced review process,” a spokesperson said on Friday in a statement via Deadline.

“The Society remains committed to recognising the work of Journalists in Gaza and will be making the Special Award. It is discussing how this will take place.”

The spokesperson said “it was felt strongly that there was potential at the ceremony on the night for the recent controversy around some Gaza coverage to overshadow the Award," referencing a documentary BBC pulled from its streaming platform.

The cancellation of the award during the Television Journalism Awards in the UK last week sparked outrage in the UK, particularly among media staff.

Hamas has accused Israel of a “blatant violation” of the Gaza ceasefire agreement after Gaza’s civil defence agency reported that nine people were killed today in Israeli strikes in the northern town of Beit Lahia.

“The [Israeli] occupation has committed a horrific massacre in the northern Gaza Strip by targeting a group of journalists and humanitarian workers, in a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement,” Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said in a statement.

An Israeli strike on a vehicle in southern Lebanon killed one person on Saturday, according to the Lebanese health ministry, as reported by state media.

"A strike by the Israeli enemy on a car in the town of Burj al-Muluk (near the Israeli border) led to the death of one citizen," the ministry's emergency unit was quoted as saying by the National News Agency (NNA).

The Israeli military stated that the strike targeted a Hezbollah operative.

Although a November 27 truce largely paused over a year of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel - including two months of full-scale war - Israel has continued to launch periodic strikes on Lebanese territory since the agreement took effect.

Many victims remain under the rubble, while Gaza's government media office has placed the death toll at more than 61,000, saying thousands of missing people are now presumed dead.

New details have emerged about the Israeli drone attack in Beit Lahia, which killed at least nine Palestinians.

The attack reportedly hit a relief team accompanied by journalists and photographers.

The Palestinian Journalists Protection Center said in a statement that "Israel killed three journalists in an air strike on a media team documenting relief efforts in northern Gaza".

"The journalists were documenting humanitarian relief efforts for those affected by Israel’s genocidal war".

The Israeli military said it struck "terrorists … operating a drone that posed a threat" to Israeli soldiers but did not provide evidence for its claims.
