US President Joe Biden issued a statement welcoming the two-day extension of the truce between Israel and Hamas.

Qatar announced the truce earlier, and Hamas confirmed the agreement shortly thereafter. Only Israel has yet to offer a confirmation of its own.

The European Union foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, says he has conveyed his support for the extension in talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.

Borrell said it would “allow for more humanitarian aid to Gaza and further release of hostages”.“I commended Egypt’s key role in achieving this agreement,” he added.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said that once the truce with Hamas ends, “we will fight in the entire Strip.”

“Remember that while you are organising and resting and investigating, the enemy is also doing the same,” said Gallant, when speaking to troops from the Givati Infantry Brigade and from the Armored Corps.

“You will meet something that is a little more ready. Therefore, [Hamas] will meet first the bombs of the Air Force, and after that the shells of the tanks and the artillery and the scoops of the D9 [bulldozers], and finally also gunfire of the infantry troops,” Gallant said in remarks provided by his office.

Qatar has just announced that an agreement has been reached to extend the deal between Israel and Hamas truce by an additional two days.

Palestinian-British surgeon Dr Ghassan Abu Sitta accused Israel of using white phosphorus and deliberately targeting children during its ongoing assault in Gaza.

Speaking in London upon his return from Gaza where he was volunteering at hospitals, Abu Sitta told Middle East Eye that the healthcare situation is “desperate”.

He said doctors were being forced to use everyday household items as medical supplies ran out.

"Eventually, everything was running out. Initially, we replaced the antiseptic solution with washing-up liquid and vinegar,” Abu Sitta told MEE's Areeb Ullah and Mohammad Saleh.

“Then it ended up being morphine and having to do procedures without any anaesthetic.

“The situation was medieval-like.”

Palestinian children freed from Israeli jails as part of a prisoner exchange deal between Hamas and Israel said they were subjected to torture in captivity and that several fellow detainees were beaten to death.

Khalil Mohamed Badr al-Zamaira, 18, was among those released on Sunday. He was 16 when he was detained by Israeli forces.

He said Palestinian prisoners are being mistreated and beaten in prison, and there is no different treatment for children.

"They didn't differentiate between old and young," he told Middle East Eye. "Two teens were transferred from Ofer prison with broken ribs. They were unable to move."

Likewise, Omar al-Atshan, a freed Palestinian teen, said he was mistreated and tortured in Naqab prison where he had been held prior to his release.

"The mistreatment was indescribable," he told Al Jazeera during a live coverage of the arrival of released prisoners in the occupied West Bank on Sunday.

He added that one prisoner, which he identified as Thaer Abu Assab, was beaten to death in custody.

"He was subjected to too much beating. We cried for help, but doctors arrived after an hour and a half after he was already dead from torture.

"He was tortured because of a question; he asked the warden whether there was a truce. Then he got beaten to death."

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said on Monday that the events in Gaza were within the realm of the legal definition of genocide.

Safadi made the comments in a news conference at the Union for the Mediterranean summit held in Barcelona, according to Reuters news agency.

He reiterated a call for an extension to the current truce in Gaza that was made by other participants at the summit, and expressed regret that "some among us" refused to support that call.

Egyptian, Qatari and US negotiators are close to agreeing an extension to the truce in Gaza, which is in its fourth and final day, according to Egyptian security sources who spoke to Reuters.

The negotiators are still discussing the length of the extension and which Palestinian prisoners would be freed under it.

The sources said that Hamas was seeking a four-day extension while Israel wanted day-by-day extensions, with negotiations to continue over which Palestinian detainees would be released.

Testimonies from captives who were held by Palestinian groups in Gaza have been discussed in Israeli media, following the release of dozens of hostages.

Alon Ben-David, the senior defence correspondent for Israel's Channel 13, spoke over the weekend of the treatment of captives by Hamas.

"Hamas tried to provide the required medications every day. But there were days when medicine was provided and others without," he said during a televised news segment.

He added that food was scarce, and all the captives had noticeably lost weight.

"The majority of hostages were together, holding meetings and lectures, sharing stories. Their activities and being together gave them strength to survive those underground conditions [in tunnels]," added Ben-David.

"All the hostages were together, speaking of good conditions and treatment by the Hamas men. In addition to the medication, they were not subjected to violent treatment or torture."

He said that the released captives spoke to the families of other captives, stating that their family members were "fine and alive".

According to Haaretz, some of the captives followed Israeli media and were informed about ongoing events. One nine-year-old, Ohad Munder, heard birthday greetings for him on Israeli TV.

The report added that some of the captives spent the entirety of their time in underground tunnels, while others were in hideouts.

Those underground reportedly experienced harsher conditions, with a lack of food and sunlight.

In another Haaretz report, the grandmother of three Israelis held prisoner said her loved ones were treated "more or less okay".

Varda Goldstein said her grandchildren knew of the tragic fate of their father and older sister, who were killed during Hamas's attack on southern Israeli communities on 7 October.

"Kfar Aza is a strong kibbutz; it will be rebuilt in the next two years," she said. "The state of Israel owes us, the residents of the Gaza periphery, and it must return them all home, and it must help us rebuild the communities."

Cracks have begun to emerge in Israel's wartime coalition after minister Benny Gantz said his party would vote against planned budget changes.

In a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Gantz outlined his opposition to plans by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to funnel extra expenditure into religious schools and settlements in the occupied West Bank.

“We will oppose disbursing coalition funds or any additional budget that is not connected to the war effort or advancing economic growth,” he wrote.

Israel and Palestinian group Hamas have raised concerns over the lists of Israelis and Palestinians due to be released on Monday, the final day of an agreed four-day truce, an official briefed on the matter told Reuters.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Qatari mediators were working with Israel and Hamas to resolve the issues and avoid delays.

Hamas said it wanted to extend the truce. Israel has previously offered to agree to an additional day for each additional 10 people freed, and to release three times the number of Palestinian prisoners each time.

"There is a slight issue with today’s lists. The Qataris are working with both sides to resolve it and avoid delays," the official briefed on the matter said.
