The day a ceasefire was declared in Gaza should have brought Motasem Dalloul relief. Instead, after losing his wife and two children in Israeli attacks last year, the prominent journalist learned that another one of his sons had been killed while trying to find food.
“I learned of the martyrdom of my son Ibrahim just hours after [US President Donald] Trump announced the ceasefire.
“He is my third son to be killed by Israel since the beginning of the genocide in Gaza,” said Daloul, speaking to Middle East Eye.
The journalist remained steadfast in Gaza City, refusing to evacuate to the south throughout the two-year war, even as Israel threatened residents and invaded the city.
Dalloul and his family were displaced 13 times, and until recently they had been living in a tent in the al-Rimal neighbourhood.

US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met senior Hamas officials, including Khalil al-Hayya, on Wednesday in Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh in a meeting that helped seal the Gaza ceasefire deal, sources close to the Palestinian movement told Middle East Eye.
The following day, 9 October, Israel, Hamas and mediators in Egypt signed the deal to end the genocide in Gaza.
Hamas leaders feared Israel would resume its attacks on Gaza once the 20 living Israeli captives were freed.
MEE's sources said Middle East envoy Witkoff and Kushner, who is Trump's son-in-law, flew to Egypt to hold a highly unusual direct meeting with Hamas leaders to assure them the deal would definitively end the war.
Axios, which first reported the details, said Witkoff told Qatari, Egyptian and Turkish mediators that Trump had made this promise when he touched down in Sharm el-Sheikh.

Without naming any countries, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused several governments of buying into "Hamas's false propaganda".
"More and more governments succumbed to antisemitic mobs in their own countries. They just turned on Israel. They called for us to surrender to Hamas's demands, just leave Gaza immediately," he said in a speech to the Israeli Knesset.
"They said 'end the war' without committing to disarm Hamas, without committing to a demilitarised Gaza."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu heaped praise on US President Donald Trump, and said his "pivotal leadership" was crucial in securing the Gaza ceasefire deal.

"It has already been carved in the history of humanity."
Netanyahu repeatedly lavished praise on Trump, and said that his "pivotal leadership" got the "backing of almost the entire world".
He also said that the Gaza ceasefire plan "brings all our hostages home, [is] a proposal that ends the war by achieving all our objectives, [and] a proposal that opens the war to a historic expansion of peace in our region and beyond our region".
"Mr President, you are committed to this peace. I am committed to this peace, and together, Mr President, we will achieve this peace."
