US Senator Chris Murphy has expressed criticism over Trump’s decision to attack Iran.

“I was briefed on the intelligence last week. Iran posed no imminent threat of attack to the United States,” Murphy said in a social media post. “Iran was not close to building a deliverable nuclear weapon. The negotiations Israel scuttled with their strikes held the potential for success", Murphy shared on a post on Twitter.

Other Democratic legislators have questioned the legality of the attacks on Iran, noting that while presidents have the power to respond to imminent threats, Trump is yet to explain what, if any, immediate danger Iran poses to the US.

Israeli state broadcaster Kan said there were 10 hits in Israel from latest barrage of Iranian missiles.

The missiles and shrapnel hit northern and central Israel, including Haifa, Ness Ziona, Rishon LeZion and Tel Aviv, according to Israeli media.

Minutes later, the Israeli military said that people were permitted to leave shelters, signalling that the threat from the latest Iranian attack was over.

An official from Yemen's Houthis said that the group's response to US attacks on Iran was "only a matter of time".

Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, a member of the Houthi political bureau, told Al Jazeera Mubasher TV that its ceasefire deal with Washington was before the war on Iran.

Since late-2023, the group has launched attacks on shipping lanes and on Israel in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

It agreed to a ceasefire deal with the US in May to stop attacking American ships in exchange for an end to Washington's bombings of Yemen.

Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran's foreign minister, has strongly condemned the US attack, and said Tehran reserves "all options" to defend itself.

"The United States, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has committed a grave violation of the UN Charter, international law and the NPT by attacking Iran's peaceful nuclear installations," he wrote on X.

"The events this morning are outrageous and will have everlasting consequences. Each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behavior.

"In accordance with the UN Charter and its provisions allowing a legitimate response in self-defense, Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interest, and people."

Here's a quick recap of the developments from the past few hours:

  • Donald Trump said US air strikes had "completely and totally obliterated" three Iranian nuclear sites, as Washington directly joined Israel's assault on Iran. The president warned that if Iran did not make peace, the US would go after further targets
  • Iranian officials confirmed on Sunday that parts of nuclear sites were struck, including Fordow, the secretive Iranian nuclear enrichment facility buried half a kilometre under a mountain near the city of Qom. Sites in Isfahan and Natanz were also struck

  • Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, the government body responsible for nuclear energy, said that it would not allow the development of its "national industry" to be stopped

  • There had been "no signs of contamination" after the US strikes, and therefore there was no danger for inhabitants living near the sites, according to Iranian authorities

  • Israel was in "perfect coordination" with Washington over the strikes, Benjamin Netanyahu said. The Israeli prime minister praised a "bold decision" by Trump, saying it would "change history"

  • Israel closed its airspace until further notice "due to recent developments", the Israel Airports Authority said

  • The Israeli military raised the country's alert level following the US strikes. Schools and workplaces would be closed under the new restrictions, with the exception of "essential sectors"

  • Antonio Guterres, the UN secretary-general, labelled the US strikes on Iran a "dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge - and a direct threat to international peace and security"

Iranian authorities said on Sunday there had been "no signs of contamination" after the US attacked nuclear sites in several parts of the country.

"The airspace of the State of Israel is closed to entry and exit due to recent developments," the authority said in a statement, specifying that "land crossing points [with Egypt] and Jordan are operating normally".

Israel had initially closed its airspace on 13 June after launching its surprise attack on Iran, but reopened it on Friday for flights repatriating Israeli citizens stranded abroad.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his promise to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities had been "fulfilled" following strikes carried out "in perfect coordination" between the Israeli and US militaries.

The level of damage to the nuclear sites is not immediately clear.

"From the beginning of the operation, I promised you that Iran's nuclear facilities would be destroyed, one way or another. This promise has been fulfilled," Netanyahu said in a video message posted to social media.

"A short while ago, in perfect coordination between me and President Trump, and in perfect operational coordination between the [Israeli forces] and the US military, the United States attacked Iran's three nuclear facilities Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan," he added.
