Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has named Major General Mohammad Pakpour as the new commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Tasnim news agency is reporting.

He will replace the former head of the military branch, Hossein Salami, who was killed in this morning's Israeli attack.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said that no-one benefits from further escalation in tensions between Israel and Iran and called for all parties to return to the negotiating table.

Wadephul, who is in Cairo as part of a planned trip, said that he would meet with his Egyptian colleagues to discuss the situation but said continuing on to Israel or Jordan seemed out of the question.

"I will consider this further this afternoon and will then be able to comment on it," said Wadephul on Friday.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday that Israeli strikes on Iran and its nuclear facilities were unprovoked and in breach of the United Nations charter.

"Unprovoked military strikes against a sovereign UN member state, its citizens, peaceful cities, and nuclear energy infrastructure are categorically unacceptable," the ministry said in a statement.

Iraq has issued a statement calling on the international community to intervene to avert further Israeli attacks on Iran, warning that "statements of condemnation are no longer sufficient".

In a statement Iraqi government spokesman Bassem al-Awadi called on the UN Security Council to take “decisive action and concrete measures” to avert further Israeli attacks.

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has called on all parties to exercise restraint in the aftermath of major Israeli strikes on Iran earlier on Friday.

“The situation in the Middle East is dangerous," Kallas said.

"I urge all parties to exercise restraint and prevent further escalation," she said, adding that "diplomacy remains the best path forward, and I stand ready to support any diplomatic efforts toward de-escalation".

Oil prices surged to over 7 percent on Friday in the aftermath of Israel's major attacks on Iran, raising concerns about disrupted oil supplies.

Brent crude futures LCOc1 jumped $5.1, or around 7.4%, to $74.46 a barrel by 0843 GMT after hitting an intraday high of $78.50, the highest since January 27. 

U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude CLc1 was up $5.1, or 7.5%, at $73.15 a barrel after hitting a high of $77.62, its highest level since January 21.

Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways has reported it is experiencing disruption to several services across the middle east, and is having to re-route a number of flights following Israel's attacks on Iran this morning.

The airline added that passengers transiting through Abu Dhabi to connect cancelled flights would not be accepted for travel from their point of origin.

Meanwhile ANP news is reporting that dutch airline KLM has cancelled all its flights to Tel Aviv until at least 1 July.

China expressed deep concern about Israeli attacks on Iran this morning and urged de-escalation for regional peace and stability, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Friday.

"China opposes any infringement upon Iran's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, and opposes any escalation of tensions and expansion of conflicts. A sudden rise in regional tensions is not in the interests of any party," Lin Jian told a regular press briefing.

Jian also said China was ready to play a constructive role in easing the situation.

The Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran says that no radioactive or chemical leakage has been detected at the Natanz nuclear site, which was targeted by an Israeli attack this morning.

It reported in a statement that the site was damaged, but added that there had been no reports of casualties yet.

It said investigations to determine the extent of the damage were underway.

The organisation further condemned global nuclear watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency for failing to intervene amid repeated Israeli threats against the country's nuclear infrastructure.
