At least 100,000 Palestinians were likely killed in Israel’s war on Gaza, according to a new study released by one of Germany's leading research institutes, the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) in Germany.

The MPIDR published a report on Tuesday, determining that the number of people killed in the Gaza Strip is substantially higher than the Palestinian health ministry’s own figures.

MPIDR is Europe's second-largest institution for demographic research and one of the largest worldwide.

The study estimated that 78,318 people were killed in Gaza between 7 October 2023 and the end of 2024 as a direct result of the war. In a subsequent analysis, the authors found that by 6 October 2025, the number of conflict-related deaths in Gaza had likely surpassed 100,000.

The United Nations has said that reconstruction of the Gaza Strip will cost $70bn over the coming decades, while warning of imminent economic collapse in the occupied Palestinian territories

The report released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad) said Israel's bombardment of the enclave had created a "human-made abyss" in Gaza, with the economy contracting by 87 percent over the course of 2023-2024.

Israel's systematic destruction and economic siege have left its GDP per capita at just $161, among the lowest in the world.

Meanwhile, repeated attacks by soldiers and Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank were also plunging the Palestinian territories into crisis.

The UN said decades of economic progress had been wiped out in Palestine.

Turkey's spy chief met with his Egyptian counterpart and Qatar's foreign minister in Cairo on Tuesday to discuss transitioning to the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire deal and increasing joint efforts in coordination with the US, a Turkish source said.

"During the meeting, [they] also agreed to continue strengthening coordination and cooperation with the Civil Military Coordination Center (CMCC) to eliminate all obstacles to ensure the continuity of the ceasefire and to prevent further violations," the source said, adding that the three officials also discussed countering Israeli violations of the accord.

A group of Israeli settlers established a new outpost on Tuesday afternoon inside the Bedouin community of Shallal al-Auja, north of Jericho in the occupied West Bank, Wafa news agency reported.

Hasan Mlehat, general supervisor of the Al-Baidar Organisation for the Defence of Bedouin Rights, said the settlers erected initial structures on the ruins of an abandoned home in the community and built metal barracks and internal divisions at the site.

The new settler structure raised the number of outposts in and around the community to four, which the organisation described as part of ongoing expansion efforts threatening Bedouin communities in the area.

The Popemobile used by the late Pope Francis on his 2014 visit to Bethlehem re-emerged on Tuesday as a mobile children's clinic to be deployed in Gaza.

But instead of transporting the leader of the world's 1.4 billion Roman Catholics, the re-branded "Vehicle of Hope" is now set to serve in the war-battered Gaza Strip, in accordance with the late pope's wishes.

It was unveiled in Bethlehem in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, around the corner from the Church of the Nativity and Manger Square, where preparations are well underway for Christmas.

"The Vehicle of Hope is ready for its new mission," Cardinal Anders Arborelius, the Bishop of Stockholm, told a press conference, after blessing the vehicle.

"We want every child we reach to feel seen, heard and protected. The rights and well-being of the child come first."

The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned on Monday that possible overflowing of ponds in Gaza’s Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood could increase the risk of infections.

"Gaza’s Sheikh Radwan ponds are again at risk of overflowing – and only short-term fixes like draining sewage into the sea are possible," the agency said in a post on X.

"This raises the risk of infections," the agency added, calling for the equipment needed to repair vital systems to be allowed in.

Former senior officials in the defence and justice establishments contacted Israel's National Security Committee chairperson to warn of the consequences of advancing a death penalty bill for Palestinian prisoners convicted of killing Israelis, with no appeal, Haaretz reported.

"The proposal will severely damage the security of Israel and its citizens, and could endanger Jews and Israelis around the world," they said in a statement, adding that it would deepen divisions in Israeli society.

The former officials called for the proposal to be removed from the Knesset agenda, saying that imposing the death penalty is "unacceptable in terms of legal norms, and therefore unconstitutional".

The statement was signed by former Shin Bet chiefs Ami Ayalon and Carmi Gillon, former Shin Bet legal advisor Eli Bachar, and former deputy attorney general Dina Zilber, among other former senior officials.

Israeli settlers have gone unpunished in 21 cases where they killed Palestinians over the past two years amid what B’Tselem describes as a campaign of “ethnic cleansing” in the occupied West Bank.

The human rights group noted that the military has been enforcing “an increasingly permissive and reckless open-fire policy” in the Palestinian territory, including the use of air strikes, since 7 October 2023.

The military has also armed “thousands of settlers” while turning a blind eye to their near-daily bloody attacks on Palestinian civilians.

In a social media post on Monday, B’Tselem said there have been 21 cases of settlers killing Palestinians since October 2023, but “not a single perpetrator has been convicted”.

Overall, Israeli forces and settlers have killed more than 1,004 Palestinians in the West Bank since then, including 217 minors, according to B’Tselem’s tally.

Heavy rain submerged displacement tents in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, deepening the suffering of Palestinians already struggling with the hardships of being uprooted.

The downpour turned camps in the al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis into pools of mud and water, making movement nearly impossible, local media reported.

Floodwater seeped into many tents, endangering families and their few remaining belongings.

Cold weather has compounded the misery of children and the elderly, amid severe shortages of blankets, winter clothing and heating.

Weather conditions are worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis for hundreds of thousands of displaced people.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad's military wings - the Qassam Brigades and al-Quds Brigades - said on Tuesday they will hand over to Israel the remains of a captive at 4 pm (1400 GMT).

The armed wing of Islamic Jihad said it had located the body of a captive on Monday during search operations in the central Gaza Strip.

Hamas released all the living captives and returned the remains of 25 of 28 dead captives, in line with the ceasefire that came into effect on 10 October.

In exchange, Israel has released nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners into its custody and returned the bodies of hundreds of dead Palestinians.

The bodies of at least 17 Palestinians, including 14 pulled from rubble and 16 wounded in Israeli attacks, arrived at hospitals in the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours, the Palestinian health ministry said on Tuesday.

Israeli attacks have killed 345 Palestinians and wounded 889 others in Gaza since the ceasefire on 11 October, the report said.
