UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told Al Jazeera Arabic that aid was being "militarised" in the Gaza Strip, as the US and Israel push for control of aid through the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

Speaking on Wednesday, Dujarric told Al Jazeera Arabic that the militarisation was hampering the UN's independence and ability to carry out its work.

The UN says it will not work with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, slammed Israel on Wednesday at the UN Security Council for using aid as "a weapon of war" and putting starving Palestinians in "cages"

"The images of hungry, desperate people storming out of the cages they were forced into, in order to get aid, is gut-wrenching and heartbreaking. These are people, human beings, deprived of water, food, medicine for so long, and hanging to life by a thread," Mansour said.

Palestinians have been forced into metal fence barricades as they wait for aid from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

"After seeing starvation being used as a weapon of war, now we see aid being used as a weapon of war," he said.

The UN's envoy for the Middle East told the Security Council on Wednesday that Palestinians are sinking into an "abyss" with a "manmade" famine stalking the enclave.

"Since the resumption of hostilities in Gaza, the already horrific existence of civilians has only sunk further into the abyss. This is manmade," Sigrid Kaag, the UN's special coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, told the Council.

"Death is their companion," she continued. "It's not life, it's not hope. The people of Gaza deserve more than survival. They deserve a future."

The aid that is now coming in "is comparable to a lifeboat after the ship has sunk", she said

The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) said that two Palestinians died while storming a warehouse for food in central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah.

The deaths underscore how famine-like conditions are driving Palestinians in Gaza to desperation.

“Humanitarian needs have spiralled out of control after 80 days of complete blockade of all food assistance and other aid into Gaza,” the UN agency said.

The agency warned of “the risks imposed by limiting humanitarian aid to hungry people in desperate need of assistance".

Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday called for a ceasefire in Gaza, in one of his first official statements on Israel's war since becoming Pontiff.

"From #Gaza, the cries of parents rise to heaven ever more intensely as they clutch the lifeless bodies of their children, searching for food and shelter from bombs," he wrote on X.

"I renew my appeal to leaders: cease fire, release all hostages, and fully respect international humanitarian law!"

At least 10 Palestinians were killed and 62 injured over two days as they scrambled to retrieve aid from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation distribution centre, the Gaza media office said on Wednesday.

The office said that the Israelis “opened direct fire on hungry Palestinian civilians who had gathered to receive aid".

“This crime was part of a dubious engineering project run by the American organization called Gaza Humanitarian Relief (GHF)," the centre said.

The centre said that the foundation contradicts "humanity, neutrality, integrity, and independence".

No medicine, bottled water or baby food.

Palestinians who waited in the punishing midday heat to receive aid packages from the US and Israeli backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), found the supplies woefully inadequate, Middle East Eye reveals.

MEE broke down what Palestinians found inside the aid boxes, which includes stuffed grape leaves, pasta, flour and beans, but lacks dozens of other essentials.

"We just want to feed our children," Abdullah Suleiman al-Sadudi, a displaced Palestinian who managed to secure a box of aid, told MEE on Wednesday.

"What are we supposed to do? Have mercy on us. This is wrong."

Chaotic scenes are emerging on Wednesday of hundreds of starving Palestinians storming a UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine, or Unrwa, warehouse in Gaza.

"It’s chaos: a human tide surging toward hidden aid. Thousands are pushing, shouting, and clawing for sacks of flour and child nutrition boxes," Palestinian reporter Abdulruhman Ismail wrote on X.

In a video, hundreds of Palestinians can be scene in a corrugated steal warehouse in Deir al-Balah scrambling for aid and ripping boxes open.

The UAE has published further details about its summoning of the Israeli ambassador.

The Emirati foreign affairs ministry said in a statement it told the Israeli ambassador that it condemned in the strongest terms the "deplorable and offensive violations against the Palestinian people that took place in the courtyard of Al-Aqsa Mosque and in the Muslim Quarter of the Old City".

Earlier this week, far-right Israelis assaulted Palestinians and recited inflammatory chants in Jerusalem during the provocative annual "Flag March".

The UAE said such scenes in Jerusalem were "provocative, arbitrary practices [that] represent dangerous incitement against Muslims, and are a flagrant violation of the sanctity of the holy city".

It added that the continued attacks by Israeli extremists and incitement to hatred and violence constituted "a systematic extremist campaign that not only targets the Palestinian people but the entire international community, further escalating tensions at a time when efforts should be focused on ending the ongoing tragedy in the Gaza Strip".

"The UAE calls on the Israeli government to assume full responsibility, condemn these hostile acts, hold perpetrators accountable without exception to ministers and officials, and take urgent steps to prevent the exploitation of Jerusalem for agendas of violence, extremism and incitement," the foreign ministry said.

It called on Israel to respect the custodial role of Jordan over the holy sites in Jerusalem in accordance with international law.
