At the Clinton rally in New York early on Wednesday morning, Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta told Clinton supporters to go home and that each vote is being counted. He did not concede the election.

“We’ll have more to say tomorrow,” Podesta said. “Your voices and your enthusiasm mean so much to her and to Tim and to all of us. We are so proud of you, and we are so proud of her,” he added..

“She has done an amazing job, and she is not done yet.” Let’s get those votes counted, and let’s get this done,” he concluded.

The reaction of sending Podesta has been met with swift criticism on Twitter.

Oil prices tumbled on Wednesday as vote counting showed Republican Donald Trump doing better than expected in several crucial battleground states in the US presidential election.

With traders glued to their screens, crude futures markets roared into action as counting advanced, with Trump holding narrow leads over Democrat Hillary Clinton in a series of key contests.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) CLc1 crude futures fell to a session low of $43.07 per barrel, down more than four percent from their last close and their lowest since September, before inching back to $43.30 a barrel at 3.33am GMT.

International Brent crude futures LCOc1 were down three percent at $44.68 a barrel.

"This is dejavu of the Brexit moment, very worrying," said Bob Takai, president at Sumitomo Corp Global Research in Tokyo, referring to Britain's surprise vote to leave the European Union in a referendum last June, which led to market turmoil. (Reuters)

Canada's main immigration website appeared to suffer repeated outages on Tuesday night as Donald Trump took the lead in several major states and his prospects for winning the US presidency turned markedly higher.

Some users in the United States, Canada and Asia saw an internal serve error message when trying to access www.cic.gc.ca.

Officials for the ministry could not immediately be reached for comment, but the website's problems were noted by many on Twitter.

The NBC and CBS networks have just called the swing state of Ohio for Donald Trump. He is given a 10 percentage point lead with 83% of precincts reporting.

That's a big result - Ohio has been a weathervane in recent elections, with the winner also taking the presidency.

All eyes are now on Florida - 99 percent of precincts have returned, but the result is still too close to call.

The New York Times now says Donald Trump has a 58 percent chance of winning the election, but warn the projections can be "volatile" early in the evening: Case in point, the NYT's Electoral College race is swinging from Trump to Clinton by the second. Whatever, the Trump camp will be feeling far more confident with the early voting.

Republicans will maintain their six-year control over the US House of Representatives, according to early network projections, as the party also put up an unexpectedly tough fight to protect their majority in the US Senate on Tuesday.

The ABC and NBC television networks said Republicans, as widely projected in opinion polls, would keep control of the House, which has been in their hands since 2011.

Winners had been declared so far in 11 Senate races, with Democrats making a net gain of only a single seat so far. Several other key races were still seen as too close to call as polls began to close on Election Day.

Party dominance in Congress will be a crucial determinant of the policy-making outlook for the next president, whether it is Democrat Hillary Clinton or Republican Donald Trump.

Democrats picked up their first Senate seat from Republicans as Representative Tammy Duckworth, as expected, defeated Senator Mark Kirk in Illinois, according to the major TV networks.

Duckworth is a double-amputee Iraq war veteran. With her victory, Democrats need to pick up four more seats from Republicans in order to win a majority in the Senate.

The networks projected that in Indiana, former Senator Evan Bayh failed in his bid to return to the Senate, losing to Republican Representative Todd Young. The two candidates had been vying to replace Republican Dan Coates, who retired. Bayh's loss was a missed opportunity for Democrats to gain a seat.

In Florida, incumbent Senator Marco Rubio, who ran unsuccessfully for the Republican presidential nomination earlier this year, was declared the winner and re-elected.
