Reuters, citing a Syrian source familiar with high-level talks in Damascus, has reported that Syria’s new leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa, has formally requested Russia to extradite ousted President Bashar al-Assad and his top aides.
The source claims the request was made during discussions between Syrian officials and a Russian delegation. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to confirm whether the issue was raised during Tuesday’s meeting between al-Sharaa and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.
Lebanon’s health ministry has confirmed that five people were wounded after an Israeli drone targeted the village of Majdal Salem in the country’s south.
The attack, carried out using an unmanned aerial vehicle, comes amid ongoing cross-border tensions and underscores Israeli violations of a ceasefire struck more than two months ago.
US Senator Bernie Sanders has condemned President Donald Trump's comments that millions of Palestinians from Gaza be removed from the enclave, calling it "ethnic cleansing" and a "war crime".
Sanders, an independent senator from Vermont and a leading progressive voice in American politics, was the lone senator to condemn the remarks and called on others to censure Trump for making the suggestion.
"Trump said he wants to “clean out” Gaza and push the millions of Palestinians living there into neighboring countries," Sanders said in a statement on X.
"There is a name for this - ethnic cleansing - and it’s a war crime," he added.
Trump on Sunday said he wants Egypt and Jordan to take in Palestinians from the territory, calling Gaza a "demolition site".

Today marks one year since the death of Palestinian girl Hind Rajab, who was killed by an Israeli tank shell in Gaza City.
The young girl, just six years old, was in a family car when the Israeli tank fired at close range and then followed up with a shell which also struck the ambulance dispatched to assist.
The Hind Rajab Foundation commemorated the painful anniversary, vowing to honour her memory. “We carry her name with pain, hope and an unyielding determination to seek justice – for her and for all the victims of the Gaza genocide,” they wrote on X.

The Palestinian Red Crescent confirmed that their teams retrieved the decomposing bodies of 14 Palestinians from various locations along Gaza's coastal Rashid Street.
A 25-year-old Palestinian, Osama Omar Abu al-Haija, has been killed by an Israeli drone strike in the occupied West Bank’s Jenin city, confirmed the Palestinian health ministry.
Israeli forces blocked ambulance teams from reaching the wounded man. His body was later discovered on the roof of a building, and Palestinian Red Crescent Society crews transported it to a hospital.
The Palestinian Prisoners Affairs Authority has reported that two Palestinian captives from Gaza have tragically died in Israeli detention facilities.
The men, who were being held by Israel forces, were killed while being held in custody.
Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner general of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa), said the implementation of a ban on the agency's operations inside Israel would cripple its ability to work in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip, where a fragile ceasefire currently remains in place.
Lazzarini told the UN Security Council on Tuesday that the ban would "heighten instability and deepen despair in the occupied Palestinian territory at a critical moment".
“The relentless assault on UNRWA is harming the lives and future of Palestinians across the occupied Palestinian territory," he said.
“It is eroding their trust in the international community, jeopardising any prospect for peace and security.”
An Israeli law, which was adopted in October and goes into effect on Thursday, bans Unrwa's operations in Israel. The law says this would include occupied East Jerusalem, though it is recognised internationally as Palestinian land.

According to Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, the Israeli military has demolished roughly 60 Palestinian homes in the Jenin refugee camp since the start of their assault in the occupied West Bank town.
The damage across the camp is evident, with widespread destruction visible in areas affected by the assault.
Most of the camp's residents have fled, and security officials have confirmed that the Israeli army allowed them to leave through designated routes, though this forced exodus has left the area devastated.
On 1 November 2024, a coalition of concerned individuals and organisations launched the Gaza Tribunal (GT) in London in response to the international community's failure to halt the genocide in Gaza.
After more than a year of carnage, its convenors launched this civil society initiative with an urgent mission: to stop the killing in Gaza and establish a permanent, reliable ceasefire - something the United Nations and other parties involved failed to do.
The guiding aspiration of the tribunal was to represent the peoples of the world in their endeavour to overcome this horrifying spectacle of daily atrocities in Gaza and resist the temptation to accept our collective helplessness in the face of such totalising devastation.
It also seeks to hold Israel - along with complicit governments, international institutions and corporations - accountable for their roles in the violence.
In line with this mission, the GT has worked to ensure political independence from governments and active politicians, refusing to accept governmental or compromised funding.

Since the outbreak of Israel's war on Gaza in October 2023, 884 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank, with violence intensifying in recent weeks.
The latest death occurred in the suburb of Irtah, south of Tulkarm, where 23-year-old Ayman Naji was shot and killed by Israeli forces during a raid.
For the second consecutive week, Israeli troops have expanded their operation from Jenin to Tulkarm, forcefully displacing over 1,000 residents as raids continue in the area.
Since the start of Israel's war, 7,370 Palestinians have been wounded, and more than 14,400 detained.
US President Donald Trump has invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House next week, making him the first foreign leader to visit since Trump's re-election, both leaders confirmed on Tuesday.
The announcement comes as Washington pushes Israel and Hamas to extend a fragile ceasefire that has temporarily halted a brutal 15-month Israeli war on Gaza.
Negotiations over the more contentious second phase, aimed at securing a lasting end to the conflict, are set to begin on Monday.
Israeli occupation police have arrested 12 Palestinians in Kafr Aqab, north of Jerusalem, for taking part in celebrations marking the release of a former prisoner, according to Yedioth Ahronoth.
The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation has reported that US envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, is in Gaza to oversee the enforcement of the ceasefire agreement.
According to Israeli media, Witkoff is set to visit the Netzarim corridor on Wednesday before holding talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the next phase of the deal with Hamas.
Seven European nations have voiced strong opposition to Israel’s decision to shut down Unrwa's operations in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, telling the UN Security Council they “deeply deplore” the move.
In a joint statement, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Slovenia, and Spain condemned Israel’s unilateral withdrawal from the 1967 agreement with Unrwa, accusing it of obstructing the agency’s ability to carry out its UN-mandated work.
The group also demanded an immediate halt to the enforcement of Israel’s ban, insisting the measure violated international law and the UN Charter.
“We stand firmly behind Unrwa as part of our humanitarian commitment and our unwavering defence of international law, including international humanitarian law,” the statement read.

We deeply deplore the adoption by the Israeli Knesset of legislation aimed at abolishing UNRWA's activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
UNRWA remains more essential than ever.
