In a rare move, a number of US Foreign Service officials based overseas are planning to register their objection to Trump's executive order.

According to ABC News, drafts of a “dissent” memo have been circulating among diplomats and associates abroad expressing concern that the new restrictions against Muslim immigration will actually harm efforts to stop  attacks inside the US.

"This ban ... will not achieve its stated aim to protect the American people from terrorist attacks by foreign nationals admitted to the United States,” says one draft, seen by ABC.

"Given the near-absence of terror attacks committed in recent years” by visa-holders from Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, Iran, Libya or Sudan, “this ban will have little practical effect in improving public safety,” it adds, comparing the order to the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War 2.

"Decades from now we will look back and realize we made the same mistakes."

Britain on Sunday won an exemption for its citizens and dual nationals to US President Donald Trump's visa ban on seven mostly Muslim countries.

Foreign Minister Boris Johnson secured the deal after it emerged high-profile British citizens, such as Olympic Champion Mo Farah, were affected by the executive order imposed by Trump on Friday.

It barred visa holders from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, affecting dual nationals from Britain and elsewhere.

But following Johnson's intervention the foreign ministry said the order would only apply to individuals travelling directly to the US from one of the seven countries.

"If you are travelling to the US from anywhere other than one of those countries (for instance, the UK) the executive order does not apply to you and you will experience no extra checks regardless of your nationality or your place of birth," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"If you are a UK national who happens to be travelling from one of those countries to the US, then the order does not apply to you - even if you were born in one of those countries.

Canada will offer temporary residence to people stranded in the country as a result of US President Donald Trump's recent travel ban, the immigration ministry said Sunday.

Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen, speaking at a news conference, did not say how many people were blocked in Canada after Trump on Friday suspended the arrival of all refugees for at least 120 days and barred entry to the US for 90 days for people from seven Muslim majority countries.

Hussen also said that the Trump administration had assured Ottawa that Canadians having dual nationality with those countries would not be affected by the US ban.

A Syrian Christian family has been denied entry to the US as a result of Trump's executive order despite an earlier pledge to make allowances for threatened non-Muslim minorities in the seven countries the ban applies to.

The Assalis - two brothers, their wives and children - had been attempting to fly to the US from Doha in order to reconnect with family members already living in Pennsylvania.

According to CNN, the family were told they would not be allowed to enter the country on Saturday and were told they could either be detained or fly back to Doha - they chose the latter.

Trump has previously said that he would prioritise Christian refugees from the Middle East.

In a series of tweets, Mohamed ElBaradei, former vice-president of Egypt, criticised Trump's executive order and condemned the lack of reaction from the Arab world:

Translation: "Decision to ban citizens of 6 Arab countries from entering the US for 90 days: In the absence of a serious Arab reaction, the question is when will they announce the death of the Arabs?"

Translation: "On Trump's decision to ban citizens of 6 Arab countries and on the return of torture mechanisms: Will there be an Arab reaction to make us feel somewhat dignified?"
