The Palestinian Authority's ambassador to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, warned the international community against reiterations underlining Israel’s “right to self-defence”, as such messaging “will be interpreted by Israel as [a] licence to kill, to pursue on the very path that led us here”.

"317 Palestinians or even more were killed in a single day, including children, some of them just a few months old, or entire families who were killed together," Mansour said, ahead of a closed-door discussion at the UN Security Council; "Will this bring security? Will it advance peace?" he asked.

Palestinian journalist and Gaza-based human rights activist Maha Hussaini says that for Palestinians, “being at war is an enduring reality that has shaped their daily lives for the past seven decades”.

According to Hussaini, Palestinians have been facing war crimes at the hands of Israel since the Nakba in 1948, which resulted in the forcible displacement of 750,000 Palestinians.

Hussaini believes while Hamas’ attacks on Israel may be seen as surprising to many, “an escalation of events was undoubtedly expected, given Israel's tightening of restrictions and the rise in assaults across the occupied Palestinian territories during the past few months”.
