While residents in the south of Lebanon are being advised to evacuate, most have chosen to remain.

"Life is normal. I don't know anyone who has left their village in the past two days because of the recent events. Of course, some people in the south were urged by their families in Beirut to leave, but they have refused to do so," one resident of Bint Jbeil, a town in Lebanon's south, told MEE.

"There is a sense of anticipation in the south, but markets and shops are open, and people are on the streets going about their day as usual. I can't say if there has been mobilisation near the border, but there haven't been any mobilisations in the villages, neither before nor after the attack on Israel."

Author and journalist Jonathan Cook says that Palestinian civilians in Gaza have faced repeated rampages from Israel decade after decade, "producing far more suffering, but have never elicited a fraction of the concern currently being expressed by western politicians or publics".

He says that Palestinians in Gaza's strikes against Israel are "vaguely comparable to the savagery Palestinians in Gaza have faced repeatedly since they were entombed in a cage more than 15 years ago, when Israel began its blockade by land, sea and air in 2007".

Much of the analysis, according to Cook, has distracted from the real lessons in the events, which are that "no one cared" when Palestinians were subjected to a blockade, starvation diets, targeted by snipers and bombed.
