Hello MEE readers.

Israel has continued overnight air strikes on Gaza City, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government responds to a surprise military campaign by Hamas.

Israel's security cabinet announced that it would be halting electricity, fuel and the transfer of goods to the besieged enclave after it concluded a meeting on Saturday evening.

And air strikes by Israel have hit several residential buildings in Gaza on Sunday morning, including multiple high-rise towers.

The military operation by Hamas that was launched against Israel in the early morning of Saturday caught Israel by surprise.

Efraim Halevy, the former head of Israel's intelligence service Mossad, said in an interview with CNN that the attack was "beyond imagination" for Israel, and that "we didn't know they had this quantity of missiles, and we certainly didn't expect that they would be as effective as they were today."

So far, the Israeli and Palestinian death tolls currently stand at nearly 300 Israelis killed and at least 232 Palestinians killed, with more than a thousand injured on both sides.

Our live coverage will continue on throughout the morning. You can follow our blog for updates, and keep an eye on our social media platforms on FacebookXInstagram and YouTube.

Israeli air strikes have hit more residential buildings in Gaza on Sunday morning, according to several Palestinian news outlets.

Israeli forces bombed the Watan Tower in Gaza City, and also hit the 11-storey Al-Aklouk Tower. Palestinian news sites also reported that bombs struck the Matar residential building.

Similar Israeli air strikes on residential towers in the past have provoked a heavy response from Palestinians, who demand Israel avoid targeting civilian buildings.

The Gaza-based Al-Qassam Brigades said it renewed rocket fire towards Israel on Sunday morning.

Israel’s southern district police forces and the country's military on Sunday said that they had secured control of the Sderot police station.

“A short time ago, full control was achieved,” a police spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said it "neutralised" 10 Palestinians after carrying out live fire “by all means” on the station.

Sderot was one of several southern Israeli towns that Palestinian fighters were able to penetrate with relative ease as Gaza launched a military campaign against Israel in the early hours of Saturday.

Republican lawmakers in US Congress, as well as leading presidential candidates, have piled on the Biden administration saying that Gaza’s military operation against Israel is tied to the Iran-US prisoner swap that granted Tehran access to $6bn in Iranian oil revenue.

Former President Donald Trump said that the hostage deal was a major reason for the attacks.

“The war happened for two reasons,” he said. “The United States is giving — and gave to Iran — $6 billion over hostages.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is also running in the Republican primary, said the Biden administration’s foreign policy decisions were to blame for the Palestinian attack on Israel.

In August, the Biden administration agreed, in exchange for the release of five Americans held in Iran, to waive sanctions on the transfer of $6bn in frozen Iranian funds from South Korea to Qatar.

In response to the statements from Republicans, a senior Biden administration official said: “I cannot think of a more irresponsible claim to make in such a situation about the hostage deal, and it’s also completely false.”

Efraim Halevy, the former head of Israel's intelligence service Mossad, said in an interview with CNN that the Palestinian attack on Israel "was a total surprise" and that "we had no warning of any kind".

"We didn't have an inkling of what was going on," he told the news channel.

In response to Hamas launching thousands of rockets at Israel on Saturday, Halevy said that the attack was "beyond imagination" for Israel, and that "we didn't know they had this quantity of missiles, and we certainly didn't expect that they would be as effective as they were today".

The former Israeli intelligence chief also told CNN that the Palestinian attack was unique and that it was "the first time" Gaza has been able to "penetrate deep into Israel and to take control of villages".

An Israeli member of the Knesset is calling for another Nakba against the Palestinian people after Hamas launched an attack on Israel.

"Nakba in Gaza and Nakba to anyone who dares to join!" Ariel Kallner, a member of the Likud party in Israel, said on X.

The Nakba, or catastrophe, refers to the ethnic cleansing of Palestine by Zionist militias to make way for the creation of Israel in 1948.

That military campaign by Zionist forces killed thousands of Palestinians, destroyed hundreds of villages and forcibly expelled 80 percent of the Palestinian population from their homeland, forcing them to become refugees.

A series of Israeli air strikes have hit the centre of Gaza City, which has a population of about half-a-million people.

The strikes come after an Israeli army spokesperson urged Palestinians in Gaza to evacuate their homes, an order that critics slammed, as no evacuation protocol or shelters exist in the besieged enclave.
