At least 10 killed in Aleppo air strikes

It remains unclear if Syria or Russia carried out air strikes that left children dismembered

At least 10 civilians were killed, including five children, in air strikes on Friday on the rebel-held town of Atareb in the Aleppo province of northern Syria, a monitor said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said three strikes targeted the main road and centre of the town, warning the death toll could rise because of a large number of seriously wounded.

It was unclear if Syrian government warplanes or aircraft of its Russian allies carried out what the Observatory called "a new massacre" that left children dismembered.

More than 280,000 people have been killed in Syria - Staffan de Mistura, the UN Special Envoy for Syria recently put the figure at 400,000 - and more than half its population has been displaced since the conflict began with the brutal repression of anti-government protests in 2011.

Earlier this month, the two announced an agreement on "concrete steps" to salvage a failing nationwide ceasefire in Syria, a key step before negotiations can resume.

The February ceasefire between the government and a number of rebel groups (excluding the Islamic State), which was brokered by the US and Russia, is largely in tatters.
