The Syrian army and its allies continued to bomb rebel-held areas of Aleppo on Friday, including heavily populated civillian neighbourhoods.

Video footage captured by Middle East Eye shows a group of scientists who have resorted to using their expertise to fight back. They have created a chemical formula that would react if it comes into contact with the fighter jets. In a show of resistance they fill the balloons with the chemical compound and release them into the sky.

The fighting in Aleppo early this week has been the most intense there for more than a year. The UN's humanitarian affairs chief, Stephen O'Brien, said on Friday that he was "horrified and sickened" by the air strikes, adding that they may constitue a war crime.
