Family of detained Gaza doctor call for urgent release after Israeli raid

The family of Dr Hussam Abu Safia, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, has issued an urgent plea for his release after his abudction by Israeli forces during a raid on the hospital on Friday.

In their statement, the family emphasised the tireless efforts of Dr Abu Safia, noting his crucial role in supporting Gaza’s health system amid the ongoing conflict. "It is no secret to anyone the immense efforts Dr Hussam has made since the beginning of the war to support the only healthcare system for the residents of North Gaza, your families, friends, and loved ones," the statement read.

The family revealed that Dr Abu Safia is currently enduring severe conditions, including exposure to extreme cold. They also described horrific treatment during his arrest, with eyewitness accounts detailing how he was forced to strip off his clothes, including his medical coat, and was used as a human shield by Israeli soldiers.

Further accounts from detainees arrested by Israeli forces paint a grim picture, with reports of beatings, torture, and being left in freezing conditions for hours.

"We implore every living conscience, every international organization, and institution to act urgently," the family urged, calling for immediate intervention and justice.
