Arab League chief calls for lasting peace in Palestine beyond Gaza ceasefire

Arab League secretary general Ahmed Aboul Gheit has labelled the Gaza ceasefire an inadequate measure for long-term peace.

He said that the only way to achieve genuine stability is by establishing an independent Palestinian state.

Referring to Israel's 15-month campaign in Gaza as "genocide", Gheit told the UN Security Council that real peace can only be reached when Palestinians are granted their right to self-determination on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as their capital.

He also warned that Israel's ongoing oppression of Palestinians threatens not just regional but global peace.
