The death toll from yesterday's Israeli attacks on Mawasi refugee camp in Khan Younis and Shati camp in Gaza City has risen to at least 110.

In Mawasi, at least 90 Palestinians were killed and 300 injured after Israeli war planes targeted tents sheltering displaced people in a designated "safe zone". Not long after, Israeli forces bombed a prayer hall in Shati refugee camp, where people had gathered for noon prayers, killing at least 20.

Mohammed Aghaalkurdi of Medical Aid for Palestine (MAP) witnessed the attack on Mawasi and described the scenes as being "beyond comprehension".

"Ambulances streamed in relentlessly for over two hours. The emergency department overflowed with patients on beds, floors and corridors. Some of them have had their amputated limbs beside them. Blood stained the ground. The smell of burnt flesh was overwhelming," he said.

A video released by MAP revealed Palestinians digging by hand to retrieve those buried in the sand.

"I don't know what to say, the situation is a tragedy. I am not exaggerating, we have a funeral every 15 minutes leaving the hospital. This has been ongoing since the incident. One by one, people are getting killed," Aghaalkurdi said.

He added that Nasser and Amal hospitals in Khan Younis, as well as the Kuwaiti Hospital in Rafah, were overwhelmed and were no longer able to receive wounded people.

Hello MEE readers,

The death toll for what have widely been deemed "massacres" in Khan Younis and Gaza City reached 90 today, with more expected as bodies are dug out from rubble and dirt.

Israel said its target was top Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif. The Hamas movement has said that Deif was not killed.

More updates from this evening include:

  • Former US President Donald Trump appeared to be grazed by a bullet during a rally in Pennsylvania.

  • The International Court of Justice announced that it will issue an advisory opinion on legal consequences related to Israeli actions in occupied Palestinian land during the next week.

  • Pramila Jayapal, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, condemned Israel's attacks in Gaza, reiterating calls for a ceasefire.

  • The Council on American-Islamic Relations says Israel is acting with impunity, knowing that it will continue to receive US support despite its atrocities against Palestinians.

  • Senior Hamas official Abdel Hakim Henini took to the official Hamas Telegram channel to call on Palestinians to defend those being "slaughtered" in the Gaza Strip and "to stand up to Israeli settlers wreaking havoc across the West Bank".

In a statement, the Hamas movement said its political chief Ismail Haniyeh held phone calls with officials in Egypt and Qatar, which are mediating ceasefire talks with Israel, as well as other regional countries after the deadly Israeli attacks in Gaza earlier on Saturday.

"He underscored that at a time when Hamas has been dealing positively and responsibly with the latest proposal for a deal to end the aggression against our people, the Israeli position articulated by Netanyahu has been to put obstacles to prevent reaching an agreement," Hamas said in a statement.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier that Israel would not give up its "right" to resume the fighting as part of a deal with Hamas. He also argued that the Israeli attack that killed 90 people in al-Mawasi would send a clear message that "Hamas’s days are numbered".

Hamas said Haniyeh asked the mediators in Egypt and Qatar to "do what is needed with the US administration and others to stop the massacres against our people".

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced that it will issue an advisory opinion on legal consequences related to Israeli actions in Occupied Palestinian land during the next week.

The court will deliver its opinion on Friday 19 July, according to an ICJ statement.

“A public sitting will take place at 3 p.m. at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the seat of the Court, during which Judge Nawaf Salam, President of the Court, will read out the Advisory Opinion,” the court added.

Khalil al-Hayya, the deputy head of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, told Al Jazeera Arabic that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had wished to declare a "fake victory" during his news conference earlier announcing an assassination attempt against top Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif.

Hayya reiterated that Israel's claims about targeting Deif are false "despite the pain for the dozens of victims and martyrs, most of whom were women and children".

"The blood of Mohammad Deif is not more valuable or better than the blood of the smallest Palestinian child. Still, we tell Netanyahu: You have failed. Mohammad Deif is listening to you now and mocking your false, empty statements," Hayya said during the interview.

The war in Gaza "will only end after we have accomplished our objectives," said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Said objectives include: destroying Hamas’ military capabilities, freeing the captives and ensuring that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel.

Defeating Hamas is a "prerequisite to defeat the axis of evil", he told the press conference, referring to Iran and its allies.

He referred to the al-Mawasi strikes, saying that Hamas has been relenting due to Israel’s show of force in Gaza and that the strikes earlier today "contributed to that".

Senior Hamas official Abdel Hakim Henini took to the official Hamas Telegram channel to call on Palestinians to defend those being "slaughtered" in the Gaza Strip and "to stand up to Israeli settlers wreaking havoc across the West Bank".

"We reiterate how important it is for Palestinian youth to stand up to the occupying forces," Henini said.

"A global war is being waged against the Palestinian people, their rights and their resistance forces. The US administration is a true partner in all the massacres being perpetrated against our people."

Pramila Jayapal, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, condemned Israel's attacks in Gaza, reiterating calls for a ceasefire.

"Israel is continuing a horrific assault on Gaza, forcing the closure of medical facilities & even restricting the entry of medical equipment," Jayapal said in a social media post.

"We must do more to stop this. We need an immediate & permanent ceasefire to release the hostages and save lives."

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair) says Israel is acting with impunity, knowing that it will continue to receive US support despite its atrocities against Palestinians.

"President Biden’s continuing support for and silence about the genocide gives a green light for more Israeli abuses and war crimes," Cair executive director Nihad Awad said in a statement.

"President Biden must stop enabling these daily massacres and end our nation's complicity in genocide. Administration officials must begin to treat Palestinians as human beings worthy of life, dignity and justice, not as animals only fit for slaughter."
