Yosri al-Ghar, a survivor of the overnight Israeli bombardment, said the air strikes killed his pregnant sister, her husband and three of their children. Their fourth child is in serious condition.

He described the area as once being considered safe, far from the border, where life had been normal.

"The strike was direct, with no warnings," Ghar told Middle East Eye outside the war-battered Nasser hospital in Khan Younis.

"It was a clear targeting of civilians, including children. The attack was absolutely barbaric."

He expressed deep frustration over the lack of global response.

"There's no world, no Arab world, or even Islamic world, speaking out. If a kitten were killed, the world would have protested, but instead, the silence is deafening."

Yemen's Houthis on Tuesday claimed their third attack on American warships in 48 hours, despite US strikes that have sparked mass protests organised by the group.

The movement also condemned Israel's wave of strikes on Gaza, vowing to escalate their own operations in support of Palestinians.

The Houthis had targeted ships in the Red Sea after the start of the Gaza war and until the January ceasefire.

The United Nations' humanitarian coordinator for Palestine called for the ceasefire in Gaza to be immediately reinstated after Israeli air strikes pounded the enclave on Tuesday, threatening a complete collapse of the two-month truce.

"Waves of airstrikes occurred across the Gaza strip since the early hours of the morning ... This is unconscionable. A ceasefire must be reinstated immediately" Muhannad Hadi said in a statement.

Medical sources told Al Jazeera that the death toll from Israeli attacks on Gaza has reached 356, as Israel ordered the forced displacement of residents in four neighborhoods, instructing them to "evacuate immediately."

In a statement on X, Israel's Arabic-language spokesman, Avichay Adraee, said Beit Hanoun, Khirbet Khuza'a, Abasan al-Kabira and Abasan al-Jadida would become "dangerous combat zones."

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has ordered the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt to remain closed, preventing Palestinian patients from leaving the enclave for medical treatment abroad as part of efforts to pressure Hamas, according to Israeli media reports.

Around 3,500 people have left the Gaza Strip via the Rafah crossing with Egypt since the ceasefire came into effect in January, including more than 2,000 people requiring medical treatment, according to the UN.

Two Hamas sources told AFP on Tuesday that Israel's overnight strikes on Gaza killed General Mahmud Abu Watfa, who headed the interior ministry in the territory.

Abu Watfa, who headed police and internal security services in the Gaza Strip, was killed in a strike on Gaza City, said the two sources, one of them an official at the interior ministry.

Israeli Democrats party leader Yair Golan accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of resuming the war in Gaza for political survival, saying soldiers and captives are “just cards in his game of survival.”

“Netanyahu is using the lives of our citizens and soldiers because he trembles in fear of us - the public protest against the dismissal of the head of the Shin Bet,” the left-wing leader said, referring to Netanyahu’s recent announcement that he will terminate Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar.

Israelis “must not let the madness win” and instead protest in order to save the state of Israel “from the hands of this corrupt and dangerous man,” he said.

Families of Israeli captives said they are "shocked, angry, and terrified by the deliberate dismantling of the [ceasefire] process" as they condemned Israel's renewed attacks on Gaza.

The claim that the war is being renewed for the release of the captives is a "complete deception" as military pressure endangers the captives and soldiers, the families said in a statement. "We must return to the cease-fire."

The families' statement directly addressed the Israeli government: "Why aren't you fighting in the negotiating room? Why did you pull out of the deal that could have brought everyone home?"

They also called on President Donald Trump to release all the captives.

"The greatest fear of the families, the hostages and the citizens of Israel has come true – The Israeli government has chosen to give up on the hostages," the statement read.

"Returning to fighting before the last person is released will come at the cost of the 59 hostages who are still in Gaza and could be saved and returned.

"The Israeli government has refused to declare an end to the war in order to implement the next steps in the deal and return all the hostages."

Izzat al-Risheq, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, said Israel is sacrificing the lives of its remaining captives in Palestine by resuming the war on Gaza.

“Netanyahu’s decision to return to war is a decision to sacrifice the prisoners of the occupation and a death sentence against them,” Risheq said in a statement shared by CNN.

“The enemy will not achieve through war and destruction what it has failed to achieve through negotiations,” he added.

Haaretz reported that Egyptian-American contractors stationed at the Netzarim Corridor were withdrawing from their posts, as Israel launched a wave of attacks on Gaza and ended the ceasefire early on Tuesday.

The Netzarim Corridor is a 6km stretch of land that divides northern and southern Gaza.

It was established by Israel’s military during the 15-month war and stretches from the Israeli boundary with Gaza City to the Mediterranean Sea.
