Prominent Palestinian political prisoner Marwan Barghouti has been “brutally” assaulted by Israeli prison guards, according to information relayed to his family.

The account passed to them claimed that part of Barghouti’s ear had been cut off, and that his ribs, fingers and teeth were broken during repeated rounds of beatings.

Arab Barghouti, Marwan's son, told Middle East Eye that the family learnt of the assault through a phone call from a man who identified himself as a recently released Palestinian prisoner.

Israel is threatening to demolish a refugee camp’s popular youth football ground built on land owned by the Armenian church on the outskirts of Bethlehem in the shadow of the West Bank separation wall.

The artificial grass pitch, which was installed in 2021, is regularly played on by youngsters from Aida refugee camp, including girls who have represented the Palestine women’s national teams at youth level.

Early one morning two weeks ago, Israeli soldiers pinned a notice to the gates of the football ground ordering a halt to all activities at the site and warning that it could be demolished because it had been built without the correct permits. A nearby theatre and a garden in the area were served with similar notices.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha) said in its weekly briefing that Israeli military operations in the northern West Bank - particularly in Jenin and Tubas - affected more than 95,000 Palestinians over the past week.

According to the agency, almost half of the 227 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces or settlers between 1 January and 1 December were from the Jenin and Nablus governorates, with four fatalities recorded in the last week alone.

Ocha also reported a sharp rise in settler violence, documenting 1,680 attacks across more than 270 Palestinian communities since the start of the year, averaging five incidents per day.

The ongoing olive harvest has been particularly targeted, with 178 settler assaults reported in October and November across 88 communities, underscoring what the agency described as “widespread” and persistent violence.

A spokesperson for the embassy said it has "requested multiple times that the UK government provide protection to the Embassy of the State of Palestine in the UK".

"We did not receive any proper security arrangements to protect our embassy and staff," the spokesperson told Middle East Eye.

"At this point, we kindly request the UK government fulfil its obligations under the Vienna Convention," they added.

Here are the latest updates from Israel's war on Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank:

  • Israeli forces stepped up their operations across Gaza overnight. An Al Jazeera correspondent reported that military helicopters unleashed heavy gunfire along the eastern sector inside the so-called “yellow line” in Khan Younis.

  •  Palestinian media outlets said Israeli warplanes carried out a series of airstrikes targeting eastern districts of Gaza City, marking a sharp escalation in the enclave’s ongoing violence.

  • Axios reports that Donald Trump is preparing to move into “phase two” of the Gaza peace process ahead of Christmas. US officials say a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected before the end of the month to discuss the next stage of the agreement

  • Hamas said that militia leader Yasser Abu Shabab -  accused of working with Israeli forces and who was reported to be killed - has met the “inevitable fate” of a collaborator. The group accused him of committing “criminal acts” that violated national and social norms.

  • Yemen’s Houthi rebels freed 11 crew members on Wednesday held since a July attack that sank the cargo ship Eternity C, according to the Associated Press. Oman took custody of the mariners, who are now en route home, though images released by the Houthis showed only 10 of the crew.

  • A US federal judge said she was “struggling” to understand why Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish PhD student and pro-Palestinian activist, remains barred from Tufts nearly seven months after her release from US immigration detention. The judge questioned whether Ice acted arbitrarily by removing her from the federal student database after she co-wrote an opinion piece critical of the university’s response to Israel’s war in Gaza.
