Live: Israel, Lebanon sign framework peace deal after US-mediated talks

An Israeli soldier was killed and 13 others were wounded in an attack in southern Lebanon on Saturday, according to reports cited by The Times of Israel.

The outlet said a barrage of rockets and a drone struck an Israeli military position in the Kfar Tebnit area, causing multiple casualties among troops involved in operations there.

According to the report, the soldiers were taking part in an operation aimed at capturing what was described as a major underground Hezbollah facility beneath the Ali Taher Ridge.

The attack came a day after four other Israeli soldiers were reported killed during operations linked to the same objective.  

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Pakistan's interior minister Mohsin Naqvi have discussed ongoing diplomatic efforts, the recent ceasefire process and ways to strengthen relations between their countries.

According to a statement carried by Iranian media, the meeting took place in Tehran and focused on regional developments and cooperation between Iran and Pakistan.

The statement said Pezeshkian "emphasised Pakistan's constructive and effective role in supporting the path of diplomacy and helping to consolidate the results of the negotiations".

Naqvi, in turn, expressed appreciation for "the diplomatic efforts and measures" undertaken by the Iranian leadership and praised what he described as its role in managing political and diplomatic processes.

The statement also said Naqvi commended the guidance of Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei and his "strategic and intelligent role in supporting diplomatic processes and helping to end the crisis and establish a ceasefire".

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir are travelling to Switzerland to participate in technical-level talks linked to the implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, the discussions are scheduled to take place in Burgenstock on 21 June.

"As a follow-up to the signing of Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, technical-level talks will be held in Burgenstock, Switzerland, on 21 June," the statement said.

It added that Sharif and Munir would take part in the meetings alongside a high-level Pakistani delegation.

The talks are expected to focus on the implementation of commitments contained in the agreement and the next steps in the diplomatic process.

Prince Turki al-Faisal, Saudi Arabia's former intelligence chief and ambassador, has called on Gulf states to establish a joint defence network capable of responding collectively to threats against member countries.

Writing in Asharq Al-Awsat on Saturday, he said the Gulf Cooperation Council had faced repeated challenges and should "stand together like a solid, fortified structure" to strengthen regional security.

Turki also called on Iran to abandon what he characterised as ambitions for regional dominance and to end support for groups including Hezbollah and the Houthis.

At the same time, he urged Israel to halt what he described as its "bloody brutality" and the seizure of Arab lands.

He further argued that Western countries should stop providing what he called diplomatic and military backing that shields Israel from accountability.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf arrived in Zurich on Saturday for talks aimed at advancing implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed between Tehran and Washington.

In a post on X, Qalibaf said he remained committed to those killed during the recent conflict and described them as a guiding force for the delegation's work.

"I regard the innocent children of Minab and all the martyrs of our beloved Iran as constant witnesses to my actions and conduct," Qalibaf wrote. "They see us and have expectations of us."

The delegation, which also includes foreign minister Abbas Araghchi, is expected to discuss how obligations contained in the agreement will be carried out.

Ahead of the visit, foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stressed that the trip should not be viewed as the start of a new round of negotiations, saying: "This trip is essentially aimed at demanding the fulfilment of the other party's commitments. Any understanding or agreement is ultimately tested during the implementation phase." 

Iranian media have published images showing the country's delegation travelling to Switzerland for technical-level negotiations with the United States, marking the next stage in efforts to implement and expand the recently signed memorandum of understanding between the two countries.

He told reporters that Washington's priorities include addressing Iran's nuclear programme and strengthening the ceasefire in Lebanon amid concerns that renewed regional tensions could undermine the broader agreement.

Other issues expected to be discussed include longstanding US sanctions on Iran and proposals aimed at supporting the reconstruction and development of Iran's economy as negotiations continue.

US President Donald Trump said there would be no tolls for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz during the 60-day ceasefire period established under the memorandum of understanding with Iran.

In a post on Truth Social on Saturday, Trump wrote: "There will be NO TOLLS in the Hormuz Strait for 60 days during the Cease Fire Period, and there will be NO TOLLS after the 60 day period has expired, unless they are imposed by and for the United States of America."

Under the terms of the memorandum, the Strait of Hormuz is expected to reopen for an interim 60-day period after being closed during the conflict that began on 28 February.

During that period, Iran is reportedly prohibited from charging vessels for passage through the strategic waterway.

An Israeli strike targeting a residential home in the Al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza killed Palestinian Al Jazeera Mubasher journalist and cameraman Ahmed Samir Wishah on Saturday.

Al Jazeera said in a statement that it “strongly condemns the heinous crime of targeting and killing” of the correspondent.

“This constitutes a new and flagrant violation of all international laws and norms, and reflects a continued systematic policy of targeting journalists and silencing the voice of truth,” the network said in a statement.

The Israeli military confirmed carrying out the strike that killed the journalist, claiming he was a "Hamas terrorist", without providing any evidence.

Lebanon's health ministry said late Saturday that fresh Israeli strikes in the south and east of the country had killed seven people.

Five people, including a woman and child, were killed in the east of the country and two Palestinians were killed in the southern Tyre region, said the ministry.

These latest strikes came before a pause noted by an AFP correspondent, when the Israeli army said it had received orders from the country's political leadership to halt attacks on southern Lebanon.

Iran’s delegation has arrived in Switzerland to take part in the technical talks tomorrow, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

The delegation is led by Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir are on their way to Switzerland to join the technical-level talks between the US and Iran tomorrow, according to the prime minister's office.

US President Donald Trump warned Saturday that Washington could impose tolls on the vital Strait of Hormuz waterway if negotiators are unable to complete a deal to end the Iran war.

There will be no tolls "unless they are imposed by and for the United States of America, should the deal not be completed, for services rendered as the Guardian Angel to the countries of the Middle East for purposes of both past, present, and future reimbursement of costs," Trump posted on Truth Social.

Israeli strikes in Lebanon killed at least 20 people on Saturday, Lebanon's state news agency NNA said, one day after a ceasefire with Hezbollah took effect, aimed at halting months of escalating violence.

An Israeli military official said Hezbollah launched more than 50 projectiles at Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.

Lebanon's National News Agency reported that Israeli warplanes and drones had struck multiple locations in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley.

At least 10 people were killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza today.

The US military on Saturday denied Iran's claims that it had closed the Strait of Hormuz, saying the critical waterway remained open and that US forces were monitoring the situation to ensure that it continued.

"Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz," US Central Command spokesperson Navy Captain Tim Hawkins told Reuters. "Traffic continues to flow, and US forces are monitoring the situation to ensure this remains the case."

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps declared the Strait of Hormuz shut earlier on Saturday and warned ships not to approach the waterway, casting new doubt on the future of a ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran meant to pave the way for in-depth peace talks.

An Iranian negotiating team left Iran for Switzerland on Saturday for discussions on the implementation of its agreement with the United States to halt the war, state media said.

The official news agency IRNA reported the delegation's departure, quoting foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei as saying they would "follow up and demand implementation of the other party's commitments" under the deal.

"The other side must take the necessary measures as soon as possible. Otherwise, the entire understanding will be in trouble," he said.
