Israeli attorney general Gali Baharav-Miara is expected to support Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to dismiss Defence Minister Yoav Gallant in the high court, citing the prime minister's broad legal authority over ministerial appointments and dismissals, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported.

However, Baharav-Miara may also highlight the challenges of dismissing a defence minister during wartime. A petition to block Gallant’s dismissal was filed on Wednesday, and the High Court has ordered Netanyahu, the government, and the attorney general to respond by tomorrow at 12:00 pm local time.

Palestine's UN envoy, Riyad Mansour, addressed the UN General Assembly, condemning Israel's plan to ban the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa.

In his speech, Mansour argued that Israel’s “open assault against” Unrwa is “more proof of Israel’s genocide in Gaza”, citing attacks on those aiding Palestinians as evidence.

He said that the ban is part of a broader effort to strip Palestine refugees of their status and rights.

Mansour also commended Unrwa staff who are “risking their lives” to uphold the agency’s mandate, granted by the General Assembly 75 years ago.

He said that “Unrwa deserves the international community’s full support”, urging resistance against “distortions, smears, or threats”.

The election of Donald Trump for a second term as US president on Wednesday has provoked concern and delight in equal measure around the world.

Many of America's traditional allies are waiting with bated breath to see whether Trump throws any foreign policy curveballs, particularly with regard to Russia's war on Ukraine or Israel's war on Gaza.

Others, however, see a new chance to reset relations and take advantage of opportunities that were blocked under President Joe Biden.

Middle East Eye takes a look at the reactions in the Middle East so far.

A coalition of Canada-based lawyers and activists has annouced it is filing a lawsuit charging the Canadian government with violating the Genocide Convention.

The "Coalition for Canadian Accountability in Gaza," which includes the Legal Centre for Palestine, is representing two Palestinian-Canadians who have family members trapped in Gaza.

Citing the Genocide Convention of 1948, which requires the prevention and punishment of genocide, the coalition said that the lawsuit "asserts that Canada has failed in its legal prevention of genocide".

Additionally, the coalition said in a statement that Canada has violated their plaintiffs' rights to security and equal protection "by failing to act to prevent genocide in Gaza".

Israeli media has reported the army has no intention of allowing the return of forcibly expelled Palestinians to northern Gaza, which is facing a campaign of ethnic cleansing according to rights groups.

A senior Israeli officer told journalists on Tuesday that nearly 55,000 Palestinians have been forced out of the Jabalia refugee camp since the offensive began on 5 October.

Before the latest assault, there were around 400,000 Palestinians in north Gaza and Gaza City, according to the UN.

The Israeli army has denied carrying out the "Generals' Plan", also known as the Eiland Plan, in north Gaza, which includes ethnically cleansing the area and killing any Palestinians who remain.

However, Haaretz reported that the army has been implementing a significant portion of it, expelling much of the north's population to other areas.
